I think it's more that they keep the same opinions, but progressive ideology keeps getting more and more crazy as they are caught in a feedback loop of virtue signaling, so what used to be left-wing becomes right-wing.

Left wing beliefs generally tend to stem from a naive view on the world. As you get older and have more life experience a lot of those beliefs tend to go away.
