I regularly go on long vacations and just drop my extra key off to a good friend or parent to feed and keep it company.
A dog would be a lot harder to expect your friends to take care off.

Some people care about having moments of fun to remember later, some people care about buying material things, and some people care about improving the baseline quality of life level, and accumulating resources is one of the best ways to do that.

Well I watched my parents stress with money all the time living week to week and I never wanted to end up like them.

Grew up in a poor family and the will to never going back to those problems is stronger than the will to spend money of material things and to some extent, experiences.
Obviously if I had more I'd save AND spend, but I don't so I have to choose only one.

After having had both type of animals of different sizes and variations throughout my 26 years I can clearly say that I prefer the dogs. There's a reason for them being called MANS best friend.
