It is often very bland, which is why generally people add a lot of vinegar and salt. I worked in a chippy for years, I have many tales from my time there.

That being said, it is comfy food. And the fish, when cooked correctly, is very rich and flavourful and the batter surrounding it is crispy.

It is worth a try, but I think the reason it is one of our national dishes is very much linked to its use as a morale booster during WW2 opposed to being outstanding food
