Checks out. We did some tests on grip strength (suitcase grip) in my uni class recently. One thick guy averaged at 630N (141 lbs) of force, then there was me with 620N (139 lbs). Every other guy was around 450N (101 lbs). Girls had around 250N of grip strength (56 lbs). There were 4 males and 9 females in this group. Ages 20-21.

Machines, especially computers. Jobs 50 years ago mostly involved working with your hands. Hobbies mostly involved sport or at least walking around. More and more both jobs and hobbies involve sitting in front of a screen. Even "manual labor" jobs are trending towards operating a machine or supervising a machine, very little is done with man power in industry any more. Of course plenty of people are still active, but as an average we're trending strongly towards more sedentary hours per day. So naturally people are weaker on average.
