Prior to college, I had plans on joining the Army as a combat medic, but I was told my asthma would make it difficult since it's pretty much an automatic medical DQ unless I could get a waiver.

Sure, but that opens me up to a bunch of potential legal troubles if they ever found out. Not saying they would have, but if they did I would've, at a minimum, been kicked out with an "other than honorable" discharge and at worst would be looking at a dishonorable discharge and a couple years in prison. Uncle Sam really doesn't like it when you lie to him.

Childhood asthma primarily, but I remained symptomatic well into my teens. Now it's pretty much non-existent. To be fair though, in my teens I don't recall ever getting re-diagnosed. It was always, "Oh, you have asthma? Lemme write you a prescription for a new inhaler then."

The only time I went in for a re-diagnosis was when I was getting the process started on enlisting. Did a whole bunch of lung function tests and they came back saying my asthma was pretty much non-existent at that point, which I agree. I haven't had an asthma attack in well over a decade.

But still, if you have asthma the Army sees you as a liability, even if you're in peak physical condition. I get it though, an asthma attack could happen whenever and wherever, and it's pretty hard to be effective in combat when you can't get air into your lungs.
