Admittedly, having sex with something that can't explicitly consent is not really a great thing to do. You learned from your past mistakes, though, and while that doesn't necessarily absolve you of regret I don't think there's any sense in continuing to feel shame over it.

I think an animal can make it quite clear if they do or do not enjoy something. Animals are much more basic than us but that just makes it easier to read them. Let's say somebody's trying to mess with a pony. If they do not enjoy it they will move away or outright kick you.
They also don't have complex sexual desires. They have sex for pleasure and reproduction. Multiple species have been shown to partake in masturbation. If an animal really enjoys it they may even try to initiate. Ostriches have been seen courting their keepers quite frequently.

1. The animal is sexually mature.
2. No force is used.
3. You treat the animal with respect and provide proper care.
4. The animal is not spayed/neutered, or in heat if applicable.
5. The animal is physically compatible. Smaller animals should never be penetrated, but you can pleasure them in other ways.
6. You research their anatomy and behaviour to best understand your companion.

Because you still did it out of lust and so you did it at the time without thinking of repercussions or consequence, you could have easily at the time hurt the creature or yourself and it was maybe only narrowly that you didn't, it is a guilt that you very almost did something horrific and you now know that you are capable of doing such things without care. In you future you will need to think before you act.

You're vastly overcomplicating things. Animals experience pleasure during sex too. Humans aren't special snowflakes in that regard. Humans participate in selfish activities constantly and feel no guilt for it. We wipe out hundreds of species for the sake of propagating our own. We torture and slaughter millions of animals for the sake of stuffing ourselves.

I'm simplifying things, the issue of inflicting hurt is one that is hard to come to grips with, and that includes the guilt of possibly inflicting hurt.

They can be mentally scarred if you harm them but they don't have the cognition to feel dirty or shameful like humans.
