I've barely watched any slasher films but most don't seem like they're trying to just get a sick, momentary rise out of the viewer. A lot of the time there's deeper tension, suspense, emotion, and meaning involved. I'm not trying to uplift any of it to high art but if it were all just a reel of some actors getting gutted for 2 hours all of those movies would receive a far worse reception than they get, and movies that do pull that sort of thing are absolutely panned.

Moreover, The Thing is technically a slasher movie but that shit is pure kino. There's gruesome deaths but it's all played with to give more weight to the situation and it's a heavy as fuck situation that plays on mystery and the feeling of not knowing who to trust.

It's perfectly reasonable to not want to associate with sadists, but liking that kinda media doesn't have to be about that.
