That's why in most fields they want you to have some level of vocational training or an apprenticeship. Who has the time and money to do their job AND train newbs from scratch? And many jobs require math. Also science is important if you want to understand how the world works. It's just a good thing to know.

Again, that won't work with the high tech jobs nowdays. It is literally a full time job for someone in, say, IT to train you AND for them to do their normal job. There is too much information to be learned.

And it has always been this way. Since at least the roman empire, if you wanted to go into law, government, be a scribe or clergy you had to go to school for it. This isn't new.

This anecdotal evidence, but pure math guys have the worst critical thinking skills of any STEM field, because they can make provable assertions. Almost every other field has to deal with the ambiguity added by testing hypothesis by experiment, which means second-guessing yourself among other things. Since the real world has lots of ambiguities and very few equations I feel safe in saying that the scientific method is a better banner to rally around than pure math.

If you were interested in IT you just start showing interest in it as a child and not busy going to school 24/7 and you go out and learn it actually doing IT stuff and working as an apprentice for IT and people just offer free labor to work for someone and learn instead of a job

Children don't know fuck all what they want to do when they grow up. Their aspirations change as they grow older, lots of kids in college are still clueless to what they want to do. I'd also say there are many subjects you really don't learn anything about until college. Chemistry was lame in high school, but I appreciated a lot more after taking some higher level courses in college.

Statistics needs to be taught earlier its easy enough for the most part.
