Monogamy is a result of later development, as for any advanced civilization you need to utilize not only strong males, but most of males. You need to guarantee that men will work for your society and won't be inventing ways how to screw with it to their personal gain. We all have this basic strongest urge - to leave offspring. If a society would guarantee that your female is only yours and will stay that way (thus your children are yours) then it would bring a great argument for men to stay working for that society and within it's bounds. Thus, monogamy, marriage and cult of chastity and virginity. Thus control of female sexuality. Existence of monogamy however is more of an extension of our ancient brain, it does not suppress other callings. That is why people cheat, why women "lose love" one day etc.
