Might want to check out archive.org

But that only shows so much. I want to hear it from the people who were there

earliest i remember is mid 2000s ;_;
but even still a lot of sites back then from my memory had hardly been updated since the 90s other than adding a lot more photographs to pages and flash player was everywhere.

no streaming video
extremely shitty streaming audio
but web pages were designed for computer monitors and not for fucking smartphones, so you didn't have huge fonts and tons of wasted whitespace forcing you to scroll constantly.

>no streaming video
>implying this is a bad thing

>that fucking 40 minute dialup intro sound
>if someone used the landline the internet would crash

Before there was an internet there was the BBS which was the thing during the 80's and may have winded down around 1996 or so. What you did was dial a phone number and it connected you to this one server that hosted a message board. The boards were kind of like stand-alone "islands" but I know there were efforts like Fidonet to link them in later years. With this being dial-up speeds were agonizingly slow, only one or two people could be connected to the board at one time depending on how many "nodes" there were, and file distribution was a nightmare with there being like ten files in a .zip with two being relevant and the rest being spam advertising other boards that file passed through. I don't know whether I missed out on something good or awful.

A lot of really shitty clip art and high expectations.

DUDE!!! 90'S INTERNET WAS FUGGING INSANE!!!!! ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!

seriously dude it was great
you had email for dms and irc and message boards
i started playing quake in 1996 and it was a crazy game, too bad i was playing on dialup with 300 ping
porn was kind of hard to get. roms and warez was easy as fuck to get
i'll post this one and keep typing

>mostly white
>mostly male
>mostly American
>mostly young people
>kind of nerdy/4channy
>very comfy

yeah it was pretty amazing

before that i was on AOL but it was AOL for kids so it was seriously restricted (no apps, no web browser)

i could however download tons of shareware games, i played some of epic's REALLY old games like castle of the winds and zzt

i played doom by phone exactly one time and it was cool but it was really laggy

what the hell are you talking about by 1998 i had tons of friends who were euros

Western animation is doomed!!!

I heard of something called AOhell and if you didn't have that then you were really missing out.

i really can't remember that far but 'early internet' was when the internet wasn't considered a necessity by everyone, just an add-on. as a result the main aim of the internet was to discuss and post cool shit. now since everyone's connected to the internet there's a lot more "the internet is serious"

the main thing about the 90s internet is the caliber of people who would use it were all people who at minimum had serious sleep problems or something and needed something to do at 4am and at worst were literally going insane

there were no normies. they couldn't figure out how to use the internet.

irc was awesome when i was 12 i talked a girl i met on a final fantasy forum into sending me lewds

you met some seriously fucked up people in irc it was awesome

discord makes me so happy because it's the second coming of irc. there just needs to be some global index of public discords and they're set

downloading mp3s from FTP and feeling like you were the shit

yeah i met some guys who gave me their ftps
that's how i found out about hentai
hentai was a lot easier to get than porn back in the 90s
it wasn't until torrents came around where it was easy to get porn, and it wasn't until google came around that it was easy to get pics

Well I said "mostly" which doesn't exclude some Europeans.
Over time obviously the userbase expanded massively as did the type of peoples using it.

well i've pretty much run out of things to say so unless you have any questions i'm heading back home

When did internet piracy start to be a big thing?

I used to watch newgrounds, homestarrunner and play digimon. I guess that was late 90s early 2000s though

Since forever. As long as there were computers that could be networked there was piracy.

immediately

it was more a matter of when did internet piracy become sketchy

dumped vhs tapes were not a common find but they occassionally existed in varying qualities always maxing out at whatever the highest quality they could get for 700mb (size of a cd)

apps and games were easy to get and most cracks were legit just built into the installers

there were also tons and tons and tons of free to play games, it used to be called shareware. you play like level 1 of the game and can buy the full game to unlock all the levels

quake 3 and starcraft were the first games where at first it was like oh fuck you can't pirate this, because you needed a legit key to play online

eventually the key formula was broken and id was like whatever we made our money

i mostly pirated software. word, flash, photoshop, cool edit, all sorts of stuff like that

i had emulators, which was great because i finally managed to play some games that my parents refused to buy me when i was younger (chrono trigger, ff6, earthbound) and play even more roms of games i'd never even heard of

newgrounds was around by 99 i think

keys without viruses that takes me back. warez for warez sake

and just so you know it wasn't really until smartphones rolled around that the internet starting going downhill

>back in my day stuff was better!

Gtfo. The internet is just as shitty as it was back then.

BBS days were great, ANSi graphix and scene were k-rad leetsauce.. early internet was similar but even better in some ways, when the point and click netscape browser made it easy enough for semi-intelligent normies to get online and "eternal september" began.. before that there were for all intents and purposes literally no girls on the internet though.

>tfw you’re old enough that you had to play games via teletext because there wasn’t even proper internet yet

Attached: image.jpg (1200x628, 507K)

Best internet by far. Everything was free. Nobody gave a shit about downloading anything. The original Warcraft games were out and I made tons of victories while watching Toonami. Literally god-tier decade.

you really had to know where you were going. you could still look up shit on google and yahoo. but the search engines weren't anywhere near as good. you really had to know site URLs to get places. also, everything looked like craigslist. had an all white background with text and maybe a few really low res pictures.
