The particular problem with pits and other related breeds is that they tend not to gesture. They'll just attack. You don't want your fighting dogs to intimidate each other, you want them both to just go at each other with reckless abandon.

That the dog is available to everyone because they're in every shelter and rescue and Wal-Mart parking lot being given away. That there's plenty of other breeds that were 'bred' for aggression that are still around and primarily owned by rich people who can afford to feed a 120lb dog. That the various pit breeds rank very well when it comes to passing service/work dog requirements. That mutting various other breeds to take the place of a pit would not be difficult, particularly the mastiff.

The permit argument arises because that's the only logical solution to the idea of banning and completely culling any one breed, which would require you to ban or cull other breeds in the future. Focusing on the fact that pits are overrepresented in the bite/kill statistic without asking why that is. Allow me to give you two more examples of why this could be illogical reasoning.

I've owned several German shepherds, and they were by far the friendliest, most well-behaved dogs I've ever owned. However, they had to be registered in the "dangerous dogs" registry in order to own them in my area because they were classified as an aggressive breed. My mom, on the other hand, currently owns a miniature schnauzer that is absolutely vicious and has actually bitten strangers on numerous occasions. It really doesn't make any sense.
