I am European, I use those metrics because most people here aren't. Degree in tourism is meme tier and I'm not interested in something like that anyway. I chose to study language in college because it's free and I would have to pay for a course. I'm pretty happy with my job prospects, I have many family members who chose to study languages and now have nice, stable careers.

Most people like learning languages so the competition is pretty rough in that field, unless you speak at least 4 useful languages you'll struggle. Or speak a difficult but valuable language, my best recommendation would be learning finnish, if you can speak finnish really well you can make lots of money. Obviously chinese or arabic works too but you know, you might not want to interact with those people.
I'm not saying that being a middleman is wrong but if you're really that pretentious then it'll start bothering you that you only do menial errands for other people instead of creating something intellectually impressive.
