Just learn computer programming bro

>just learn computer programming bro

Is this a meme or not? I don't have the money to go back to school, so I'll have to learn it on my own. If it won't improve my life on the outside, will it at least make me smarter and better?

If you feel like you have affinity and motivation to learn how to program, go for it.

But since this is r9k, I doubt you have either of them by default.

Free tutorials and shit are out o plenty. But if you lack basic logic and math (debatable), you're gonna have a hard time doing anything useful.

Then again, you can also learn the big words (Big Data, Internet of Things, Cloud computing etc.) and then proceed to write scam books about those topics by taking half of your info off of Wikipedia.

Speculating, over-positive Boomers do that kind of stuff all the time, and they seem successful.

Good luck man, recommending stuff to learn is for another advice fag.

Are you an incel? Do you already spend all day with your ass on a chair? Then go ahead, it's very worthwhile and rewarding. Otherwise it's not worth it; it will probably ruin your body and your social life. At least the money is good.

>Is this a meme or not? I don't have the money to go back to school, so I'll have to learn it on my own.
Programming classes are basically a scam anyway, paced incredibly slow to sucker the hopelessly talentless while everyone else stagnates. The main benefit of comp sci classes are in algorithms, and of course meeting fellow nerds.

Just google some tutorials and make small stuff until it clicks.

I'm an "incel" in the sense that I'm a socially retarded depressed virgin but I have a job and can drive and stuff. It's a part-time wagecuck job and I do have plenty of free time. Jow Forums's wiki recommends a bunch of books for me to learn from. Do I just go through those or what? I don't trust Jow Forums enough to ask them because they might just meme me like /a/ and /lit/ has done to me in the past.

university is a meme. this is all you need to learn programming

Yeah dude sure dude for sure sounds good bud

It depends on your field, you can't everything and reading books won't guarantee any improvement.

Jow Forums is chaotic and mostly out of touch with what you would use for a regular IT job.

Just curious, if you want a career change, why is Jow Forums your first choice (or choice in general) to ask advice on?

>why is Jow Forums your first choice (or choice in general) to ask advice on?

Because Jow Forums is the closest thing I have to a friend.

I've never had a friend who gave good career advice. Don't think that's what friends are for.

Plenty of other forums out there that actually help you out with the questions you have.

Reddit's not good for much, but most of their tech subreddits have quality people in it. They'll answer your questions way better as they are not bitter faggs, but actual people who share their (work)experience if you but only ask for it.

What's the purpose of learning computer programming if you don't have a degree? Genuine question, fun?

>Genuine question, fun?

I need a productive hobby and apparently anime doesn't count as a productive hobby. I've been made fun of on Jow Forums before because I don't know much about computers other than how to shitpost.

You're full of shit.

t. comp.sci. bachelor

If you have the hugest balls to knock on the door of a company and tell em you learned programming by yourself and never went to uni, and actually convince them then you got yourself a comfy job and saved 30k in student loans

lemme guess, you're a pythonlet

lemme guess, you don't have a job.

t. javaboi, also worked as a frontend (low pay but offbrainer)

You don't learn a specific language in uni. You learn to be language agnostic. Honestly amazed you're shilling C and not C++.

Yeah, you can make your own programs for whatever you want to do, or even other hobbies like making music or making videogames/reverse engineering them.
One of my first projects was making a program that converts an image to ascii characters.

Make your own smarthome, including virtual AI waifu.

this. in uni you usually learn the logic behind the programming and really not the coding itself.
Kinda like architecture you don't learn how to build walls.

To be fair, you can be a web dev but still be a low level programming hobbyist, I know Bisqwit is like that.
youtube.com/user/Bisqwit/videos

professional web dev* I mean

Bisqwit is godlike, i still don't understand shit of what he does in his videos

jesus christ please go back what the fuck

I want to start learning c# I have loads of time at work now where I'm doing nothing. I say go for it.

Jow Forums's wiki is good for general information, but I don't think most of the people on Jow Forums are really qualified to give you advice on programming, if you are really serious; lurk 8ch /tech/
Also, check out /t/, there was a batch of CS related books I downloaded there a while back.

You can learn on your own. In fact, the best way is to learn on your own by doing. It isn't for everyone though, but if you have the mindset for it, it is very rewarding and will pay well.

don't bother, you won't make more than an average employee working for minimum wage at Walmart
programming field has too many people and too many competitions especially from India, as they're willing to work for $2 an hour

you're better off getting into security

Depends where you work.

if you're in europe/asia you're out of luck.

Europe is okay if its West or Northern, also a bit Eastern. Nothing compares to US though, absolutely fucking nothing, except Switzerland.

Uh? I live in Western Europe (Belgium) and there's actually a lack of devs

Canada, Austria, Germany and Norway are also good.

He's not talking lack of devs. He's talking income.

Now that's a good idea, user, how would I get started on the book thing? Do you have any idea and or tips?

also belgium.
Wish i could do an erasmus internship there for my master's

I hate pajeets so goddam much, they ruin everything

Even after 5 yr work experience and 1000 applications i only got 1 job offer (took almost a year) and i only make $16/hr after taxes

Like most jobs, you need connections i feel like

I would really like to know your experience in this regard.

Are you from a bad country?
DO you have a degree?
What coding language?

Hope those questions aren't too invasive but this hits close.

I live in usa
I had a degree in economics from the top ranked uni in my state
I had 5 yr work experience in javascript and php
now i do java and javascript for $16/hr after taxes. I am very lucky to have any job, i was NEET for almost a year

Wtf is the situation REALLY that bad for coding jobs?? I am studying a master in comp.sci. exactly for that reason even tho im not sure i like programming

It really depends. You have to sell yourself to do well, CS is a grind like every other job and since we have such a high influx of people who won't fight for a proper salary (because shy introverts), they get underpaid easily which snowballs to others. Get your network up before you leave your uni, you'll hit much bigger as a Msc CS

Somehow it was for me

Some black dude with the same name as me has a huge criminal record. Like drugs theft burglary violation of probation. I wonder if that fucked me

I really don't know. I had no connections though, get connections

Makes sense... i'm a shyfag too
>your network up before you leave your uni
Too bad i'm gonna do MSc in europe and then fly to US or some other european country.

Now that's just bad luck.
I could make connections, but in my country is just isn't worth it. (Southern europe)

companies look at your github not your diploma

So i should take time to make projects more than i should care about having a degree?

I picked up programming because something clicked in me and I wanted to learn how to make video games.

Game dev is probably the hardest form of programming after machine learning

It's really rewarding if you put the effort in and set goals. Be prepared to suck at it for a long time, that's expected. Just be honest with yourself about how far you are. Many beginner programmers think they're awesome and later come to find out how deep the rabbit hole goes. Be humble about it.

You can get by writing many programs with minimal knowledge of maths to start with. I'd recommend at least grasping numerical bases and go from there.

This reads like desiderata or something, but really, I'm just saying go for it and hopefully it will capture your imagination.

And its the most underappreciated one, ironically

16 after taxes is heaven in eastern eu, jr. frontendfags get +-7e, once you get exp or do backend its around 10e, then the only way up is full stack dev or climbing in your position for years, peak is maybe 20e
the other idea would be yolo with startups or some brand new technology, otherwise you wont make more than 20e anywhere

You should consider that in US the rent may vary from 900dollars a month in a hinterland to 2000+ in a urban metropolis, while you can afford a small apt near the center of krakow for 300e.
Besides the cost of living is MUCH higher, from food, to bills, to literally everything, i know a friend that did a surviving month and for 60e he comfortably paid for bills and food, while i really doubt you could survive a week in us with 60dollars.

just move to the eu, work remote, healthier environment, pretty girls, cheap housing, ultra cheap alcohol (czech/slovak/polish areas recommended) everything to the west is too -western- maybe except spain but I wouldnt risk it, boomers who lived through socialism hold the socio-political stuff pretty intact so we have maybe 1-2 more generations until it turns into degeneracy and leftie tranny faggots ruin everything

>just move to the eu
>work remote
>Czech area

I know, i live in Southern europe and you literally just nailed my dream life.

>we have maybe 1-2 more generations until it turns into degeneracy and leftie tranny faggots ruin everything

This is unfortunate.

I'm not 100% sure about the western stuff getting here since everyone who has western ideals moves there, most friends from uni/high school are pretty open minded but disapprove of western standards, so if it continues like that and we don't let the EU to become the 4th Reich its fine I guess

>4th reich
If anything it will become an orwellian scenario filled with censorship like china and us is.

haha yeha that's totally some arcane witchcraft which you can't learn on your own and need to pay the kike witch to tell you how to do it

You can learn how to code on your own, aswell as studying all the algebra and math logical structures behind it for free, ofc.
Altho an uni provides a certificate that is actually valid in a job interview aswell as tutors and teachers ready to help you out whenver they got the time.
So until free online courses that delivers certificates that values AS MUCH as a degree won't exist i'm afraid we all gotta suck the McGraw Hill cock for a while.

At least we aren't in Jew.s.a. where you gotta enter a 6 figures increasing debt at 21 years old to become a patriarchy anticis inspector lol.
