I wonder how effective that truly is when dyed hair/piercings/etc seems to inhibit the ability of certain men to think straight. During my masters degree I met girls who dressed plainly that were doing PhDs in Robotics/Engineering/etc and weren't getting much male attention at all. I would think that's as un-Stacey as you can get. On the other hand, I knew an obese girl with the Skrillex cut who and was still in an "open relationship" because men had no problem sharing a woman who looked different with other men over having a woman who was actually different all to themselves. But if you have escaped this trap and have a good eye for people then good for you.

That's just differentiation... standard stuff really. If you blend in with a group you'll be less likely to get any different level of attention. If you're the lone unique individual you'll get far more attention because you likely stand out equally for everyone.
It's like a predator picking prey... the limping calf gets targeted. Picking prey from a uniform herd of healthy animals is not only extremely difficult, it's extremely dangerous. By picking out the one with a limp you can focus your attention and get far better results.

Hair does grow. Once you cut it to buzz level like 1/4" or less, it needs to be cut really often (2 weeks?) and just won't stop growing back.
