to get back to the op. people have many addictions they seek emotional solace in, as out lined by other posters.
in an unrelated example, many long time virgins find out that when they have sex it doesn't change anything really, you're still you with all the same hang ups. real, honest, emotional work has to be done before you "mature" out of your issues. Because modern life in a western country is cruel, shallow and feels completely hollow. Living in such a world leaves a lot of people with a void inside them that they feel the need to fill with something. Some people fill this emptiness with sex, some people with drugs and alcohol, some people with a revolving door of relationships and some people do it with food. Food is cheap so it's a common one, it's also the easiest to notice.

its hard for fat people. it seems obvious they just need to stop eating so much and most if not all of them know this too but it leads to guilt and stress and a good way to relieve it is through eating or more often overeating. i was never obese but i was more than 100lbs heavier than i am now at my worst and while it did get easier after putting a few months in at the gym/kitchen starting was tough as shit
