26 US states have a "castle doctrine" law allowing lawful use of deadly or lethal force with a firearm against a home intruder that has or implies the intent to harm you.
I have invoked it myself in my state, shot my shotgun off into the ground to scare off an intruder on my property, then called the police and they didn't do anything to me and went off to find the intruder.

In castle doctrine states if the intruder does not retreat and continues towards you in a threatening manner, even if not armed, it is often considered justification for use of force in all 26 castle doctrine states. Justifiable homicide differs in that the intruder must be actively trying to harm you for you to use lethal force.
