Final Fantasy 7 seems to have attained classic status.
FF 4 ( in the us don't know the Japanese numbering scheme ) sticks in my mind as a high point, but it was for Super Nintendo. I remember thinking FF 7 was as good. I played a couple after that before outgrowing FF.
I will accept FF7 as a high water mark. Nothing else in that genre seems to have the same notariety.
Believe it or not, back in 1997, when I was about 10, this was the most amazing shit I'd ever laid eyes on in terms of video games. Entirely 3D-rendered characters, let alone worlds or whole games, were something kids our age were just experiencing for the first time. If you had played through it back then, you'd be able to play it now and hardly notice the graphical shortcomings. Suppose it's the same thing as how my mom can watch shit in black and white from the 50's all day and I can't, because I was born with a color TV in my home.

The empire of Esthar ruled by the sorceress is named after Ishtar the Babylonian goddess, their emblem is the Islamic moon and star and they summon demons from the moon with a giant cube like device that resembles the freemasons' fez.

Just like Pink Floyd, it the brand had a reputation for being this sort of colorful escapism. Had some serious undertones brewing beneath the surface but never quite there.
FFVII brought all those negative aspects forward and gave people something very downbeat and different than what they were expecting.
Like Dark Side of The Moon it was also heavily marketed by business who didn't necessarily know how much of a downer it was.
For a whole generation of people it was a piece of pop culture that dug deeper and broke that sense of isolation modern life gives: the smiling lies of advertisement brainwashing and the unrealistic expectation of happiness, success and safety from loss and heartache.
The eco-terrorism and and religious overtones weren't the novel part, the novel part was the hero is a runty failure at odds with himself, deceiving himself, and striving just to be hero he never was. Set that against the theme of saving a polluted world rapidly losing its heritage the themes resonated.
It was pottery.
But at the end of the day its just another piece of pop culture. They had no idea what to do with their ideas beyond ffvii (the spirits within, bankrupcy, all the talent fleeing the company before Enix merger)
You can have an appreciation for it but trying to carry it around forever just sets you up for the nostalgia trap.

No one seems to be mentioning VI. The art style was fantastic, beautifully done for pixel art and still looks good today. Meanwhile FF7 characters had blocky popeye arms.
FFVI was probably the last of the old school JRPGs and definately the greatest next to Chrono Trigger. The characters were charming and there was a sort of light heartedness to it but nothing about it was corny or cheesy in anyway. The game also retained some of that high fantasy medieval setting that was present in the previous games. Yet it was the first game to combine scifi elements with fantasy elements.
Ever since 7, the franchise no longer had that medieval knights and castles feel. They also started incorporating anime type shit, anime looking characters and anime dialogue.
I loved 7 but everything after that is honestly shit.
I sometimes wonder if which FF you like is just based on which one you played during your childhood. Most people who like the ones from 7 onward look at 1-6 and think it's lame because of the chibi charaters.
7 was the last game I believe to feature Hironobu Sakaguchi (director), Yoshitaka Amano (artist) and Nobuo Uematsu (composer). Nobuo was boss and all the music after 7 or whenever he left sucks balls.

Uematsu did most of the music up until the release of XIII which, in my opinion, has by far the best soundtrack of any Final Fantasy. X probably comes in second and that again has XIII's composer on a few tracks. Uematsu wrote some of the most recognizable tunes in game music history but Hamauzu's works are just something else.
