I've thought about if I'm better off just not trying because almost every single time I've chatted someone up it just turns into me being unsure of how to start/carry a conversation and never doing it. Sometimes I just want to skip the initial "safe" inquiries and just delve deep into another person's personality, life and experiences. That barrier is almost always the death sentence for me because once the common footholds are there I'm almost never able to advance any further. There's lots of men that deal with women like that all the time and it's considered normal for them to be limp fish as the guy carries the entire conversation on his back.

If you're not genuinely interested in the hobby, there's not much one can do, this goes both ways. I talked to a girl who was into anime, art, a couple games and male idols. I also like anime, if it wasn't for the fact that she just about stopped watching anime around the time we started talking it would've been a fine shared hobby, but what am I supposed to do about the rest of those? I can't draw and sure as hell can't learn to draw on a moment's notice, if I started liking male idols I'd be called a fag by any sensible girl as well as myself, and most of the few games she played were singleplayer. In the end most of the time we just ended up talking about 2D porn (not just on my initiative).
And then my hobbies are mostly technical, clearly not interesting to most girls, so when you go and fake some interest, it's nice and all and it makes conversation easier to maintain, but I can easily tell that you are faking interest since there's only ever so much initiative, it's not like you're starving to learn more and asking for all the links and information I can send your way.

Yeah, for most people it's the opposite which is why it's a point of difficulty. There's a certain appeal to the safety those basic questions offer but more often than not it seems to drive me into a sort of conversational corner. As for meeting someone similar to myself, never. People are generally touchy about asking/talking about certain things (which is understandable) but I just like to get it onto the table so there's no surprises later on. Can defeat the purpose of getting to know someone & ruin any intrigue but that's what makes me more comfortable.

"Men and women can't be friends" is a crude rule that obviously has exceptions. I have one single female friend IRL and that's because she's just 100% not my type and I'm assuming (though I could be wrong) that I'm also not her type, but we get along well otherwise. This is the exception. It's far more likely that one of the two will find the other one attractive, and it just becomes friendzoning, intentionally or unintentionally. The other ~5 girls I've been close with since hitting puberty all ended in friendzoning, getting cucked by Chad or ghosting.
