yeah, like most herd mammals honestly, the only difference is that males never join any herd for good.

I was always under the impression that in most herd animals as well as lions, older males drove out younger ones just to avoid competition, whereas in elephants, where there are no older males in the herd, the female relatives drive out the young males for being aggressive, sexually or otherwise. Maybe I'm wrong, though.
