Probably because competition is fun and with sports the competition is compact and contained, the rules are clear and it goes from beginning to end in one match making it easy for a group to gather for some fun one evening and then call it a night.

that's my point exactly, i think its the fact that people just like to be part of something so big and ridiculous. just like how if you are in a stadium, nobody cares about your individual cheering or yelling or clapping or whatever, but you are a part of that greater crowd and it feels good.
so when somebody does something stupid in game and 4,000 people type LUL, its the same social concept as cheering when your team scores a goal.

Then again these trailers are meant to appeal to as broad an audience as possible so I guess it makes sense to mimic stuff that people who've never played games like that are familiar with.
