My father tried to teach me how to drive on one as a teenager, but mastering the other aspects of driving were trying enough as it is. Adding another layer on top of that all at once is not generally the best way to teach someone anything. I switched to learning on an automatic and no one has ever given me the opportunity to drive a manual since. Every car I get into is an automatic.

I found the opposite to be true. once you find a manual (because they are rare) the manual transmission cars are not eligible for the special discounts, not eligible for the special lease rates, etc etc.

When they make you a low offer for a car, it's probably an automatic. You almost have to special order, or find, a manual transmission car.

I recently traveled in yurop and was driven around a bunch. Every driver regardless of skill couldn't drive smoothly, going first to second always results in a jerk as they quickly let go of gas. I'm pretty sure this is because people are born into this and find it normal.

I used to always get manual, but automatics improved over the years to the point they are more efficient than stick. Also, if you get the right kind you can still shift them in manual mode.
