You do realize all free software on f-droid is also gratis?
Telegram rolled their own crypto, which is not a good thing btw. Whatsapp tried to make it normie-proff, which means that its essentially worthless on their service. Signal is okay-ish, but you can have a federated system with xmpp and omemo, opposed to the walled garden that is signal
