2018 and linux still can't format a usb stick.

>gparted
found your problem
real men use {f,g}disk

>changing partitions on a mounted medium
unmount it then you fuckhead.

it is for dumb people anyways

it actually wants me to reboot the fucking computer so the kernel notices the change. this is the absolute state of linux in 2018. un fucking believable.

it is unmounted...

Is this bait? When I used Windows exclusively I had a live USB with Gparted on it that I used to format drives whenever Windows would refuse to do it, which it often did unless it had a DOS partition table.

>dd if=/dev/urandom
/thread

fucking this

>2018
>not using Alpine or BSD

windows never fucks up formating a usb stick. if you put a drive in that it cant format you just use diskpart from command line and do clean then create partition primary. boom done.

>using Mint
>don't using superior Salix or GhostBSD
your fualt

Use android to format stuff. Whenever a USB soft-bricks neither Linux nor windows ever seem to do the job for me. Linux being worse because it's more careful with what you're doing and windows works sometimes.

>learn how to use fdisk
>fuck me this is fast and easy

Linux is a kernel.

>2018
>use gooye even for formating usb stick
the current state of Jow Forums

Now compare that to Windows, which half the time will either throw a vague error about not being able to format the partition without telling you what the problem is, or will flat out not even detect the USB. What a mess.

It's literally not.

>android is not linux
it's not even summer

Did I ever state otherwise? This line:
>neither Linux nor windows
applies to GNU/Linux

Go back to Windows faggot

Dear faglord how have you made it past your 9th birthday?
jesus fuckin H christ jeeeezfuckinass how can you be that fucking dumb?

Good one bud
Sums up the Linxus community quite nice

you're not supposed to format drives if you can't be bothered to learn the basics about partition tables and shit. gb2 playing your stupid gaymes

>dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sd? bs=4M
>fdisk /dev/sd?
>o
>p
>enter,enter,enter
>w
>mkfs.vfat /dev/sd??
>eject /dev/sd?

is it that hard, gui faggot?

linux is shit

I'm not stupid. Running 'clean' on diskpart won't work if the partition table is GPT sometimes. Possibly an issue with specific drivers, but I've ran into it many times with different hardware.

Works in safe mode though but that's stupid.

>linux mint
>probably garbage hardware, too
>blames the kernel

I've never actually had Windows give me any problems formatting anything, usually when I want to format a USB stick I have to exit my Linux install and use Windows just because of how inconsistent Linux is at formatting disks

what's wrong with linux mint?

It isn't gentoo

If you can't use Linux, why do you still bother to dual boot?

No it's not. remove then reinsert, look for the /dev/sd* entry and try
sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sd*

why not using /dev/zero?

I was trying to format an USB in my dad's laptop some days ago (using win 7) and after formatted, I noticed it went from 8 GB to 8 Kb in total size, by God's will it seems; of course 8 Kb is completely useless, couldn't fix it on his machine

>OP doesn't know what dd or fdisk are

gui fags really make me think

the hell are you talking about? are your usb drivers made by 12 year old chinese? never had a problem, but i've always avoided cheap boards

>Mint
>Shit doesn't work
Don't use meme distros that are based on meme distro.
Use real stuff.

I have used gparted for years and never once had an issue formatting a usb drive.
Come on OP, try harder

Bloody newbies - YOU CANNOT /thread your own post

The retard even /dev and /random'd his own post . I don't know why I come here anymore...

LOL

Literally all you have to do is unplug it and plug it back in

What the fuck.. mkfs does it 100% flawless and takes 3 seconds

>what is gparted
Also, at least linux can still read usbs that have been repartitioned / wiped on windows. On the other hand, whenever I wipe a usb and plug it into windows, I have the redo several commands on diskpart to have it working. Go fuck yourself, OP

Not surprised. The linux desktop experience is a joke and this is why it will never be popular. It can't even make a trivial task like formatting a drive easy.

I haven't read the thread but i i'm sure there are people saying "oh, well you are using 'no name free as in free disk formatting tool'!"

Why isn't something so simple built in that actually works? What a fucking joke.

meanwhile on windows, it still only supports one partition on usb drives, you need to use third party tools to make multiple partitions

>The number of replies not pointing out that the USB is still fucking mounted

It's absolutely the summer of reddit

>pic related

Windows just can't format an USB stick

>Look at me! I can't read!
The USB was formatted perfectly fine you retard.

I usually do the opposite, I reboot into my Linux install since it can actually consistently format stuff in more than 1 file system. It even does a better job than Windows for NTFS.

I've had that one on regular.

And yesterday, when I was writing something on on an USB in GAANOO, for no good reason it stayed on 99% on file transfer FOR 8 FUCKING MINUTES. And this is not the first time it has occured (with a different USB drive even on a different distro).

Lik in theory I could recommend and get running something lets say - with Budgie - for normalfags cuz simple UX and looks nice, but I cannot, because several fundamental things just don't work properly on GAANOO and this shit NOT acceptable no matter how you put it.

Linux on desktop is a fucking meme. Everything is either broken or archaic or both. And you're wondering why Linux Foundation guy is sane enough to use a Mac.

Bs=4mb can skip LUKS header

/thread: No such file or directory

For fuck's sake, mate, nobody cares.
People know bloody well what you're on about when you say "Linux".

That LITERALLY never happens.

>I hate X so I'll make shit up about X in hopes other people will hate it too
Pathetic.

"Why doesn't my 2 dollar ebay 64gb USB3 flash drive work properly" the post

you're doing something wrong

kingston usb drive 8GB
kingston usb drive 16GB
sandisk memory card 4GB
kingston memory card 16GB

and even if it was a 2 burgerbucks piece of shit from ebay, it woul likely work perfectly well on ms winders, admit it

>partitions are in use
>you format the drive
>linux doesn't destroy your data by formatting the partitions that are in use
>waits for you to reboot so you and it are sure you don't need the data on the old partition
>this is somehow bad
Windows would probably allow you to format the drive on which it is installed and from which it is running lol

And what file system was the drive?

And how big was the file?

>inb4 4gb+ file on a fat32 target drive

ISHYGGDT

>>inb4 4gb+ file on a fat32 target drive

i'm not that dum

1.4something GB file on fat32

so, what's the excuse here?

>for no good reason it stayed on 99% on file transfer
It's calculating the difference between the original and the copy. The speed of doing so is processor dependent. If you don't want to make sure you've transferred the file correctly then disable this. Windows does the same afaik. I've compared the transfer rates of Linux and windows and come to a conclusion:
>linux seems to transfer files much faster, but then gets stuck on the last 1% for a while
>is still slightly faster than windows for transferring

what do you mean?

Ironically i never have this problem using gnome disk utility.
Stop using mint too. its a cobbled together half baked ubuntu.

Because if he's lucky he will have the usb full of nudes

>fall for loonix meme
>install debian
>everything is super small on my 1080p monitor
>somehow find scaling options
>change
>you need to restart
>restart
>nothing changed

>after some time fall for looooonix meme again
>install mint
>want to change localization and keyboard layout
>need restart
>restart
>nothing but black screen with cursor

so this is state of most advanced OS?

>want to change localization and keyboard layout
Why didn't you do this while installing? And this doesn't need a restart.

>nothing but black screen with cursor
nVidia issue

I'll take "Things that never happened" for $300.

Windows allows you to just unplug the USB. No user input necessary.

Something Habbend :^)))

>Why didn't you do this while installing?
I didn't know it would set it automatically based on my Time zone.
>nVidia
Radeon r9 380

Gparted just can't format an USB stick.
When I use fdisk and mkfs it always works.

>I didn't know it would set it automatically based on my Time zone.
Why wouldn't it? You're also prompted to configure your keyboard manually during the install. You literally couldn't fuck this up unless you didn't even look at anything other than the "next" button, in which case you're better off with MacOS or Android.
>Radeon r9 380
You fucked up then. The fact that you claim that a restart is needed to change anything display related, and to change the keyboard layout means that you're doing something wrong.

>its your fault os is shit
>changing localization on installed os is impossible on most advanced OS

>i don't know shit and talk

Attached: Untitled.jpg (438x402, 34K)

/dev/zero is not /dev/random

>KDE needs a reboot to scale
Okay, the other relevant DEs don't.
>changing localization on installed os is impossible
Are you retarded? Read everything again

windows still recommends you to unmount it first, if you have something writing to your usb while your unplug it it's gonna get corrupted no matter the OS

>Read everything again
ok

>installed OS
>didn't selected localization and OS set it up for me based on my Time Zone
>want to change it after OS is installed (like any other os can do right?)
>change it
>need reboot
>reboot
>shit stop working

>using gooeey
kys yourself

>error message tells you why it can't
>come on Jow Forums and complain that it's not possible

I swear everyday Jow Forums gets dumber.

Nevermind I can't read

>what is diskpart or disk management

Your shit is mounted.

Attached: 1487468918489.jpg (533x479, 24K)

>waah you need to reboot to unmount the partition that has all system files, linux sucks!!!!111!!

Not in Windows, freetard. It will continue transferring after you plug it back in. Those are the kinds of features you *pay* for.

>It's Linus Torvalds's fault I can't read.

*citation needed*

>It will continue transferring after you plug it back in.
the what now? since when?

Windows 10. People don't know about it cause no one has tried it. Obviously Microsoft advises against it, but it is there if you accidentally unplug it. Especially if you do something like cut-paste.

It can. You're just stupid.

>right click
>format
>start
:^)

>doens't unmount partitions before formatting
>doesn't use parted

2k18 and (you) still can't format a usb stick

what about plan 9?

Use dd retard
