Australian government is trying to ban encryption without backdoors, again

Just encrypt with gpg before you use the back-doored encrypted platform, if you are really that concerned

Imagine having a government that publicly tells you that they’re going to put security flaws in devices that handle your sensitive data explicitly so they can have more control over you. This is why they always want to ban guns.

>let's make this about guns!
t. amerifat

lol

Same thing really

W-we haven't had ours for 22 years

One thing is for certain. This sort of thing was always inevitable and it will eventually be 100% successful.
Make the most of your "privacy" while you can.

Kind of feels like we are the cowboys, and everyone has moved to the big cities

muh guns

Yep, we are always behind. In one way or another

I doubt it. There's too much freely available encryption technology. They might force apps to have backdoors, but nothing is preventing me from downloading some random encryption scheme off github and encrypting every device and message I own.

That's where you're wrong, kiddo

If you think it will stop at the government colluding with tech companies for baked in access, I think you are wrong. The next step is pgp/gpg and any encryption not breakable becoming illegal to possess, full stop. It will be like how illegal pornography or ill-gotten copyright material is handled.

>encrypt with an algorithm without a backdoor
What happens now

Precisely. This is guaranteed.

dumb fucking seppo, having guns didn't stop your government from actively spying on you.

Fucking dumb mutts

You are put behind bars

Encryption makes our internet slow

B A N

Muuuh gunzzz

Hardly surprising after the Gold Coast government publicly stated they would scrape the free WIFI set up for the Commonwealth Games for things like Facebook data for "analytical purposes".

Yeah, that was a bit much

Dutton: make a backdoor pls
GNU app: no fuck off cunt

good, then I can run simple encryption on my computer, get to call myself a criminal AND get away with it because nobody in my country gives a shit

Australian governments over the past decade have been unbelievably crap. Shit like this almost makes me wish China/Trump/Putin/the Queen would just drop the pretenses and invade us already.

How weak would encryption actually be if you had to make a backdoor?

It's not really about weakening the encryption. You could pretty much make an encryption key that is just as secure as one with a single decryption key.
The problem is that now you have a third party that is holding skeleton keys. Your SSL connections use different keys each time, but a required backdoor would mean there is a skeleton key and every new connection would be vulnerable to the same key.
So if such a key leaks, you will have forced all encryption to be vulnerable until you specify a new key they need to build to and then everyone needs to update their software to that new key so that they're not vulnerable to the leaked key anymore.

It's just not workable. And they'll claim "oh we will keep the keys secure" but they can't guarantee that. Every country in the world will want those keys. If you try to deny them they'll take them by force.
Take countries that have histories of human rights violations, for instance. If Australia successfully forces software like Telegram to build a backdoor and hand them the keys, what would stop them being able to deny the keys to USA? The UK? Germany? Turkey? China? Indonesia? Russia?
If Russia gets the keys then what is stopping them giving them to North Korea? Syria?
What's stopping them abusing these keys?

It's really not the small actors we need to worry about here, it's the state actors.

It's not my fault you gays got cucked from your guns 22 years ago.

It's only a matter of time until someone figures out how to abuse the backdoor.

I'd be more concerned by this if Aus police weren't so incompetent, they legit couldn't find cunt in a brothel, no fucking way they can get past even the most basic level of encryption

I want you to abuse my backdoor senpai

/thread

Why didn't you use your guns to stop the gubment driving the populace into poverty, illness and stupidity?

>Our militia prevented our Government ever spying on us
>Because of our guns, the NSA doesn't read my email
>God bless america

Enforcing such moronic laws would be extremely hard. Any semi-competent programmer could build functional crypto system in a matter of minutes. CP is problematic because making and distributing it is extremely risky, not to mention getting in touch with other pedophiles you've never seen in person.

>visit HTTPs website
>go to jail

>skeleton keys
I thought the only long term keys in ssl are used for signatures. The communicating parties would just have to generate new key pairs (for exchange of traffic keys) once in a while and an eavsedropper couldn't do shit as long as the signature public keys are already known to all communicating parties.

Currently, yes.
That could be reworked if forced backdoors were required.

That's what you get for only ever electing lawyers and businessmen (i. e., tech illiterates). Try electing some scientists and engineers next time. You fucking faggots.

>"oh we will keep the keys secure"
That's a really big issue. You can look up lists that have leaked of websites 'banned' by AUS and other countries, something that perverts use as a shopping list and get around with the most basic technical know how, including just putting in the IP address.

Maybe you scientists and engineers should stop being autists. We haven't had any autistic politicians since radio was invented

Why do people like that even get elected?

Everyone still has guns, though.

Pretty sure no one can physically be put in jail for encryption. If so, then there should a be revolution over night.

>Maybe you scientists and engineers should stop being autists
We don't owe you anything. You're the ones who need our help.

>ban encryption without backdoors
>next, ban fat from cheeseburgers
>hur dur, if we legislate it, it can exist

>proles get mad that you mention guns
>when it's the first step to controlling you completely
I feel bad for Australians, certain Nerf guns were banned a few months ago until Hasbro made them less "powerful" if I remember correctly.

Canada will probably do this next. The March of tyranny continues.

Remember boys the government is your enemy. Fight them every chance you get.

People are being jailed for possessing certain sequence of 1 and 0s right now. How would this be any different?

Because Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford made our country into a welfare state, whose debt is going to balloon due to the shreer size of our "social" programs. The military warhawkishness of all presidents since Reagan doesn't help either at all, but it definitely pales in comparison to the retarded amount of debt we have due to social programs.

>into encrypted apps
>apps
literally no one cares

The US has already ruled that they can hold you indefinitely in contempt of court for not handing over digital content you own

It's fucking dystopian.

That's why you sue the gov't, like Miranda vs Arizona or some shit like that. Don't suffer the gov'ts bullshit.

you don't need to break encryption if you collect the data at the endpoints (before encryption, and after decryption)
Lyndon B and Richard Milhouse are the best presidents of the last 50 years.

>This sort of thing was always inevitable and it will eventually be 100% successful.

uh, no, Peg.

governments are like spergs. they talk a lot of shit and flap their hands about like crazy, but they never do anything because 95% of the time they say they're going to do insane shit like ban the letter K or ban encryption.

they can't police this, any more than they can police their requirement that ISPs keep logs of their users' activity. they are saying this shit so people think they are doing something positive. ignore it, because it will never happen.

>The next step is pgp/gpg and any encryption not breakable becoming illegal to possess, full stop.

write your own. they can't ban compilers.

anyone posting to facebook from the commonwealth games BELONGS in jail.

>> but guns

>> BUT GUNS

>> WHY AREN'T YOU TALKING ABOUT GUNS????

>Lyndon B and Richard Milhouse
>Good presidents
We haven't had a good president since Teddy Roosevelt, and even he had a lot of faults.

Will this affect fastmail?

And in those last 22 years Australia had no mass shootings meanwhile the US has one every year. Of course Amerimutt (((christians))) killing each other is a good thing so I dont see a problem with MUH GUNS
