those vendors generally offered systems at competitive prices with high-end PCs and Macs but the thing is they just weren't that superior once you put the pamphlet down and started using them. these platforms were very focused on specific industry niches and pretty much all of their software and hardware revolved around a narrow pool of use cases, and straying away from them resulted in either absolute hell or at best a pretty mediocre experience not much better than a comparable PC or Macintosh whose shitty ported software you would be running anyway

and that's provided you could even get any software to begin with; your corner computer store sure as fuck wasn't carrying WordPerfect for Unix, and none of your typical assortment of technology magazines were at all concerned with SysV users who were mostly engineers and developers using company-owned hardware they weren't in charge of managing or procuring, and the hardware situation was even worse

and to top it all off even friendly SysVs like IRIX were just plain obtuse to work with, especially for things like configuration or software installation (not everything came wrapped up in a nice and easy package) and SysV software bases are full of half-assed multiplats that poorly integrate into the rest of the system (fucking mathematica doesn't even ship with a proper CDE icon set for when you have to manually add it to the panel)

in the end a mainstream PC wasn't just more inexpensive, it was more convenient, it was better supported, it was more versatile and did a better job even if it was slower and a little more unstable, technology isn't all that superior if it's shittier to use unless you're a nerd who treats your computer as a lifestyle/adventure rather than a tool to get a job done
