Brutalist is used because it can take a beating, unlike the old "muh nostalgia" designs. Of course the modern glass buildings are just as weak if not weaker. Brutalist architecture was likely only made popular because of the fear of the cold war.

I think the majority of American buildings post-WWII should be blown up and replaced with a more traditionalist architecture. In Pittsburgh we've retained many of the sites that were built by German immigrants. They're beautiful and it's a shame that the majority of our cities destroyed their own and replaced them with soul-less trash.
