I like the idea, it installs Gnome and not much else. There's the server iso for a real mininal install.

>server iso
no. use the mini iso.

How do I upgrade? Do I have to download a new iso and install it or can I do it straight from 16.04?

>mp3 is now free as in freedom
>they still have to credit fraunhofer

What did they mean by this?

straight from 16.04

tfw korora still hasent got an update since September of 2017

I thought the final release is on Apr 26th

>it's actually called Bionic Beaver
ummm.... ubuntubabs????????????

sudo pacman -syu
That's my upgrade, you faggot.

syntax error

14.04 LTS needs to upgrade to 16.04 LTS in order to go to the latest release.

16.04 LTS should upgrade to 18.04 LTS (probably when 18.04.1 is out). Any short term support releases I think can also be upgraded.

Make sure you have set it to remind you in Software & Updates. You then can upgrade when it notifies you in Software Updater or continue getting updates for 16.04 until 2019.

Personally I like to backup my home folder and just do a fresh install.

Attached: software-and-updates.jpg (750x491, 76K)

No, I'm going to distro hop to something. Can't decide between Debian, NixOS or Void.

*sudo pacman -Syu

Install gentoo

>wasting so much time in your short life

Why yes
packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/ubuntu-unity-desktop

Xbuntu 18.04, and yes. One day.

>Install gentoo
gentoo is old meme, man.

It's old enough for it to be new again.

Can update from Beta?

*sudo pacman -Suy

>Personally I like to backup my home folder and just do a fresh install.
you might as well use windows

The minimal installation is an absolute joke, cuts out actually useful programs but leaves the amazon bullshit. Netinstall is the only acceptable installation method but at that point you might as well install debian.

How much will it break my system I update from 16.04.2?

>points to the "minimal install" option
what did he mean by this?

>gnome
staying on 16.04 until unity7 fork is stable on 18.04

Absolutely. I use Xubuntu tho. Gonna wait for the final release too.

Lubuntu 16.04 LTS here. I'll upgrade the beginning of next month. I'm actually debating whether to upgrade or reinstall from scratch.

No, I'm waiting until we get an LTS version without unity

No, I'll wait for one point release, 16.04.4 is working well with some PPAs and latest mainline kernel here.

>mp3 patent expired since forever
>ubuntu installer still blabs about it
The absolute fucking state of Canonical.

>No, I'll wait for one point release
Why tho?

I install gentoo

Attached: feyris.png (663x586, 315K)

can u install ubuntu with no GUI or desktop enviroment and the whole os be the comand line?

Yes, just get the server ISO and do not install a DE.

It doesn't matter which way pacman's parameters are put.

>implying I run ubuntu at all

Attached: 1396026162552.gif (645x773, 8K)

>use the mini iso
Has anyone tried building their own system like Arch? I know Archfags can't actually do it without copyposting a wiki every step, but Ubuntu doesn't appear to have any such documentation.

>Ubuntu doesn't appear to have any such documentation.
help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

Because shit will be broken on first release.
First point release for 16.04 fixed a lot: wiki.ubuntu.com/XenialXerus/ReleaseNotes/ChangeSummary/16.04.1

Same for 14.04
wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes/ChangeSummary/14.04.1

Same for 12.04
wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/ChangeSummary/12.04.1

Download the server iso?
SEARCH ENGINES, HOW DO THEY WORK

What do you mean the server ISO? is the server supposed to be an operating system itself?i dont need to have a server i need it like gentoo-like minimal install

The server ISO is meant for installing Ubuntu on a server. That means components such as DE are optional.

>last edited 2016-04-02
Also not the same as building from a livecd

i see. so i can use the server instalation with no DE and install whatever i want and use it as an OS right?

How do you upgrade while keeping everything?

>not using Ubuntu Server
SHIGGY

sudo do-release-upgrade

Worked well from 14.04 to 16.04. Let's see if Canonical manages to fuck it up this time.

an update will pop up asking if you want to upgrade your version. dont worry you wont lose anything

I had installed 16.04 stable or something so im not getting these updates

Is there a list what the minimal version incorporated and what not?

btw I just wanted to install Ubuntu again on my laptop. Now that LTS 18 is coming I wanted to use the latest one. Release is 26th...do I have to wait? Not an expert and I want a usable system

Probably not, that file chooser is shit.

Attached: 1494095345332.jpg (1280x720, 106K)

Yea, but probably in like a month, I'm on 17.04 now and it just got updated enough to stop acting retarded, plus I got finals and want to get that finished up and get caught up on sleep before I start migrating all my shit over.

I actually just installed Ubuntu MATE 18.04 beta 2 on my "new" used T430.

It is updating as we speak and will update to final when it comes out.

im already running it

>Personally I like to backup my home folder and just do a fresh install.

Why? This is basically the same as installing Windows.

Yeah, on a 64GB usb stick with persistent storage. Don't have the space to spare for a third OS on my SSD.

*sudo pacman -Onions

>No, I'll wait for one point release
This.

Will upgrading Kubuntu fuck with my configurations and such?

It shouldn't fuck up anything(although any ppas you're using will be disabled), but if there's anything important you haven't backed up yet, you should probably do that before upgrading.

>16.04.2?

why aren't you on 16.04.4?

Because the minimal install is what everybody should do.

Why install software chosen by somebody else?

Because everybody knows that the first release of a new LTS has bugs that still need to be fixed in .1

>Why install software chosen by somebody else?
If you DIDN'T want to do that, you shouldn't be installing Ubuntu in the first place.

They don't need to bother with fluendo now that the last mp3 patent has expired.

gnome is absolute shit

gnome applications look really ugly under unity without canonical's patches. those double titlebars are awful

I mean about end user software, not the OS itself, stupid fuck. Ubuntu is perfectly fine to use and they made it even better with minimal install.

NO!

>gnome is absolute shit

That's why you use MATE or KDE instead.

You are downgrading to gnome 3 shit not upgrading

unity is downgraded to gnome not kde or mate

why gnome-mpv so low? it's the best of both worlds

You can install another Ubuntu spin if you want. I use MATE.

Great argument. Try some actual content next time.

because gnome-mpv is bloat. mpv is lean and quickly updated.

You mean that cheap bomi and mpc-qt ripoff?

>Mininmal installation
>Comes with amazon bloat

>using Ubuntu and not Ubuntu MATE

that's what you get

>X is the default display server. Wayland is provided as a Technical Preview and is expected to be the default display server in 20.04 LTS. To try it out, just choose Ubuntu on Wayland from the cog on the log in screen.

They should stop pandering to Wayland already, it failed, forget about it.

Fair enough. I use minimal (not the new Ubuntu minimal option) install so it's not as relevant to me.

Are you upgrading to OpenBSD 6.3 Jow Forums?

Attached: openbsd.jpg (1920x1080, 514K)

I'm switching to Debian 9

When I used the minis it basically walked you through every step

>does not support UEFI
enjoy your ancient firmware

ewww

Is it true Gnome wants to kill support for extensions? It's absolutely unusable without dash to dock and arc menu

Never got the whole stacked tabs thing - isn't it just taking up screen real estate that should be browser window?

>Minimal installation
Wasn't that the installation that ONLY saves 150MB or so? Why is called minimal?

Depends on your use case.
On the sidey tabs take space on the side. Normal tabs take space on the top.
Usually shittops and monitors nowadays are much wider than higher.
You notice how most sites narrow down the line width (if we're talking single column) to make it more readable?
Well, that means there's a bunch of underutilized space on the sides.
Also, height is a much more precious commodity than width on monitors nowadays.
So in a way, they make sense. Although adjustable width is a must imo

You can make it autohide. It's comfy when you maximize the window.

>Are you upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Jow Forums?

Attached: 1523554690834.png (403x448, 81K)

did they drop systemd ?
if not, I won't

Kinda get it - for eg here the whole rhs of the window is wasted space so i can see the benefit - but that's just here. Most websites have a narrow (maybe 200mm) border on each side - if it's not *easily* resizable or autohide that'd be a huge pain the fucking arse when it covers text or dynamically resizes the page...

Reminder: if you plan to use GNOME, do **not** use the default installation. It'll come with bloatware and extensions that you didn't choose.

Instead, do the following:

1. Get Ubuntu 18.04 server ISO here: cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily/current/bionic-server-amd64.iso
2. Install it normally, you should get no GUI by default
3. Do the following:

sudo apt install gnome-session
log out
choose 'GNOME on Xorg' by clicking on the gear icon
log in
sudo update-alternatives --config gdm3.css
choose option 1
reboot

You'll end with a minimal vanilla GNOME install. Then, you're free to choose what programs you want.

Yeah, "minimal" according to whom?.
Also botnet.

Mini iso doesn't support GPT. Useless on most modern machines.

Is it out?
Great, I think I might.
