As a first pair of headphones would you rather get HD600 or HD650? The price difference is about 20€ here so I'm considering both options. I'd like to use these headphones to enjoy music obviously, but also for recording/mixing purposes through a Focusrite 2i2 Amp. Any suggestions?

HD650 for better matching. Assuming you're in Europe though, you might be more interested in the AKG K7xx lineup that is quite cheaper with similar fidelity.

I do live in Europe yes. As for the AKG I didn't really like them and I can definitely put 300-400€ for a nice pair of headphones. I have a stable income and I'd like to slowly build up a home studio but for now I'm confined to headphones since I can't really make too much noise. By the way what do you mean when you say matching?

I see. I thought the 6XX were just repackaged HD650 though? Also, I sometimes have to transcribe basslines from recordings (especially funk and metal), do you think any of the 600/650 would have the edge here? I imagine precision would be the important factor here.

Decent mids. I really want vocal clarity for audiobooks and some rock music for an upcoming trip.

I'm currently about to order KZ Atr after looking at several reviews saying the mids are not terrible compared to the other budget KZs. I'm looking for more suggestions but everything I search for gets described as v-shaped.

HD6XX is basically the same thing as an HD650. Just has a cheaper paint job and a shorter cable. You might be able to find it cheaper on ebay or something. The mid-bass warmth of the HD650 can make the bass stand out a bit more, or it can be pretty easily EQ'd to neutrality using free software.

You'll need to EQ in some sub-bass in the HD650, around 5-3db. Mid-bass is slightly emphasized in the HD6x0 line so there's that also.
HD6XX is a cheaper HD650, however you need to import them which might end up more expensive (or not, depends on customs luck).

The HD600/650 are only a good value if you buy them in America via massdrop or with discounts in Europe.

If you didn't like the K7XX you probably would prefer the 600 over the 650 because the 650 and K7XX are very similar. The 600 has even less sub-bass and a slightly sharper mid range.

The store I'm getting them from has a special sales on both, hence why the HD650 is around 300€ instead of a much higher 380€.
As for the K7XX it was more a problem of ergonomy, I didn't like them visually and I don't particularly like how they fit on my head.
Yeah considering said discount it's cheaper to just straight up get an actual 650.

I have the MDR-1000X. So much better than any other NC headphones on the market. Can't go wrong with them.

I have them and the hd650, they sound way better.

I understand why the impressions on these are shit... it's because people don't take more than 15 minutes to figure out how to get them to sound their best

the stock pads are ass not just in comfort but in slam. people also turn off the taction to listen to the driver's fidelity but it sounds weird without any bass, the taction doesn't kick in until 5/10 on the knob. I'm not sure why they even allow below 4/5. they slam almost as hard as the JVC after a pad swap, bass boosting with EQ, and setting the volume knob to 8/10.

Nice. I'd share my EQ preset with you but we got different pads so it wouldn't work out. The dynamic driver has a bit of a hump around 250hz, you might want to pull that down by a couple dB. Then again, I'm somewhat allergic to upper midbass so YMMV.

Nah, surprisingly not. I run it off the Valhalla on occasion as well, that thing clips like a motherfucker with anything that needs current but it seems to be fine. My DAP pushes it well enough too, only thing that can't handle it is my phone with EQ preamp.

The hump is VERY slight, like 2 or 3 dB.

I'm really looking forward to watching the nanoha and GuP movies with the Kannons. They're just God tier for anything that would benefit from a subwoofer.

yeah one of the first things I tried, personally 60-65hz is my favorite freq, not a big fan of punchy bass. pretty sure the crossover is too low on the TT but i'm okay with it, wish it was a little higher. the infrasonic bass sounds kinda gimmicky too, it doesn't stop quick enough and you can feel it oscillate. anything higher and it's great though

I personally like around 30hz the best. Maxed out the element on high gain with 7 on pulseeffects bass enhancer, 5/10 on volume/tactile knobs. That's just insane, but the tactile driver doesn't seem to be clipping yet.

yeah a little, except with the jvcs instead of it feeling like it's rumbling on your head it feels like it's violating you through the inner part of the earpads. you can feel the atmospheric pressure changes and it's puke inducing almost. they can do like 125dB of subbass, not worth kannons are way more enjoyable and safer
