I want to build myself a nice early XP era (around 2k2-2k3) rig.
Already got a pair of cl2 ddr sticks 512 megs each, a radeon 9800 pro and pair of 80 gig hdds.
The question is what platform should I go for?
Also, nostalgia thread.

Why?

Because nostalgia, messing with some old software and games is kinda fun.

WinXP MCE, faggot. I still have my remote and shit, never used it much though. But it was still cool

Go with Pentium4, since all AMD-XP chips have bare die and retarded cooler mounting.

And what about intel northbridge burnout? I heard back in the day it was kinda big problem.

why not simply use VMs? old hardware sucked, it was slow as fuck (especially HDDs)

I wouldn't bother with nForce2 motherboards. They suffered from the nvidia bumpgate issue and I've had nothing but problems with them. You're probably better off sticking with Pentium 4. The best air coolers for Athlon XP were Thermaltake Big Typhoon and Thermalright SI-97. Both are getting tough to find these days. I don't know if these apply to Pentium 4 as well. Thermaltake Big Typhoon will not fit on Asus A7N8X but they do fit on the Abit NF7-S. Also, Athlon XP does not have SSE2, which is pretty limiting these days.

Why own an SNES when BSNES exists?
Why own an old Korg synth when it's emulated in FL Studio?
Why own or do anything user?

This person doesn't know what they are talking about. Windows XP runs very nicely on Athlon XP/Pentium 4. I had boot times under 10 seconds with HDD on my Athlon XP setup - even faster when I added an SSD. If you get a hd3850 or hd4670 AGP graphics card you can even have hardware accelerated h264 playback for all your movies and porn.

Recently looked up what was the fastest Nvidia card that was supported in XP, and it turns out that XP drivers were made till 2016, so all 900 series cards are supported. You can have a fucking 980Ti on XP which is ridiculous to me since when I first used XP I had a VooDoo3 2000. The hardware span of the OS is nuts.

Yes, but nvidia stopped making AGP cards pretty early. Their fastest AGP card (7950GT) is a joke compared to the HD3850/HD4670. I actually ran skyrim on my Athlon XP setup using the HD3850 a while ago. I uploaded a video here: youtube.com/watch?v=Vq61TgJPzQo

Huh, that runs better then I thought it would, figured the single core would be more detrimental. With some performance mods you may actually make that playable on the modest hardware.
Been making a few older PCs for shits, working on 2 Win98 machines, surprised how expensive 6000 series AGP nvidia cards have gotten, AGP 6800gt runs for $60-$100. Was going to have it in a P3 1.13ghz coppermine, wile I also had a more period accurate P3 700mhz VooDoo3 3000 for MUH GLIDE games. I've got about 8 retro PCs I'm building... I need to stop.

>boot times
>OS speed
>hardware speeds
you are confusing things.

>This person doesn't know what they are talking about
OK m8

>even faster when I added an SSD
well I had no idea XP supported SSDs, so I guess it's OK, then.

>Why own an SNES when BSNES exists?
SNES weren't slow

>SNES weren't slow
Nor was a P4 with XP, a P3 with 98, a P1 with Win3.1, etc.
Shit, lately I've been browsing Web 1.0 websites with ease on my 486DX2 using IE5, only takes 1-2 seconds to render, takes longer to open gmail on my modern PC
Its all relative dude, but you seem to have a hard time understanding that.

>Huh, that runs better then I thought it would, figured the single core would be more detrimental. With some performance mods you may actually make that playable on the modest hardware.

Yep, and it's actually being hobbled a bit by fraps. It kept crashing occasionally and I eventually decided the crashes were sse2 related and gave up.

I browsed the modern web without too much trouble on my Athlon XP/Windows XP setup. You just have to use adblock and block all scripts wherever possible. I even got some hardware acceleration from my GPU in Firefox ESR. Having 2gb of RAM is critical though. Firefox would snap open in less than 10 seconds.

SSDs work fine with Windows XP you just don't get TRIM support.

>Why own an SNES when BSNES exists?
I agree. Why bother buying an old console that is not only getting expensive now, but will undoubtedly fail in the near future. Seems pointless.

>using IE5, only takes 1-2 seconds to render, takes longer to open gmail on my modern PC
are you using the HTML UI? if so, it's no wonder...

>Its all relative dude, but you seem to have a hard time understanding that.
aren't we comparing against modern tech? it was me who started the comparison in the first place...

>Having 2gb of RAM is critical though
ah, right, I didn't have that much RAM at the time, which made my PCs slow af

I'm not even saying CPUs were slow (though they were much slower, but I'm used to underclocking my CPUs anyway), but loading times in general, for all kinds of software, were. I mean, SDRAM/DDR1 were slow, HDDs were slow, the hardware itself was usually very problematic, etc.

>aren't we comparing against modern tech?
No, that wasn't the thread discussion.

it wasn't, but that's what I said here >old hardware sucked, it was slow as fuck (especially HDDs)
