not if you're a poorfag who can't afford a decent amount of ram

no, but now they are almost like their own os. chrome probably has more lines of code than a functional linux based os, if it includes only the modules you need.

i have 8 gb and Firefox uses 3-3.5 with 5-6 tabs open.
that’s kind of crazy

Chromium using less RAM than Firefux
>ohtheironing.jpg

are webpages just very big now?
this is confusing

Javascript. And ads, but you should be using an ad blocker.

i use umatrix and ublock

They never did for me.

Lower it if you care enough.

What?

>6 tabs
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

>d....did browsers always used to use most of your ram?
It sure didn't. Parkinson's Law says that work expands to fill the time available for it's completion. This is a form of that, where websites will continue to increase ads, tracking, useless graphics and video, javascript, cryptomining, etc. to fill the RAM available to users. As computer systems get more RAM, websites will add more bloat.

Yes...?

It's the memory leak. I had to change to chromium just because of that.

Firefox has a memory leak issue since Quantum, see . The more tabs you open, the worse it gets (trying to GC/minimize memory usage in about:memory does fuck all).

I leave firefox open all day (~8 hrs). Opening and closing numerous tabs and havent encountered any leaks. Don't know what to tell ya.

>since Quantum
Even before that. It started to happen to me roughly 2 years before quantum was released.

>Firefox memory leak
I use Firefox all day every day without signs of a leak on Debian. Maybe it's your OS which is leaking?

...

>OMG REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>HAVE 16GB OF RAM
>BROWSER IS USING 8GB
>IT"S TOO MUCH!! I MEAN, I KNOW I STILL HAVE ALOT OF FREE RAM LEFT, BUT... BUT STILL!!!
> REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firefox has a memory leak issue since fucking Phoenix

Tried 3 distros (Manjaro, Fedora, Ubuntu), tried the binaries from mozilla.org, tried the Windows version. All of them leak RAM like hell. The only extensions I use are uBlock origin and Decentraleyes, tried without them but nothing changed.

I use xubuntu and w10 and have had no leaks. Do you use default settings? Maybe its because of all the customizing I've done, idk.

I just disable Pocket and the new tab page.

Just use a non-retarded browser

>8gb to display webpages
this is not okay

There is no need to waste resources, even if you have the money to do so.

nope chrome (and lookalikes) use even more RAM than firefox, but firefox uses a lot RAM too.

Which browser isn't retarded nowadays? lynx or links?

>be exactly me, a privacy minded gentleman
>refuse to browse the web without muh script blocker, muh ad blocker, muh style overrides, and muh tracking protection
>ruin the internet for everbody else
heh

2018 fucking sucks

see Your browser is shit and doesn't allocate memory conservatively.

How are you ruining it for everyone else?

Says who? The web is ALOT different than it was 10 years ago.
Back then most sites' pages were compiled serverside.
Now there is WAY more JavaScript-driven sites, where many things are rendered client-side. Not to mention 100 other differences.

It's kind of like saying videogames should still be 100MB in 2018

are you implying this is a good trend? because it sure doesn't seems like so. it's sure diferent from 10 years ago, for the worse.

Because companies go further and further to circumvent all of my protections, resulting in a more bloated and infuriating internet.
It was just a joke, though.

I thought 57+ fixed that

>There is no need to waste resources
kek
You realise of course, that unused memory is wasted memory.

open up firefox 3.6.28 and see for yourself

>)17
Where do i get this dark theme for firefox quantum?

pls go away brainlet. if your browser consumes multiple gigabytes of your RAM, then it's wasted RAM. You could have used the RAM to run other programs

Try Pale Moon. It uses less than any other.

My old Pentium 4 had 512 MB RAM, XP, and Firefox 2.0.0.6. I browsed with dozens of tabs and never ran out of RAM.

How is it wasted if its not being used by anything else you retard?

It's not that it's good or bad, it's just different (privacy/tracking issues aside).
Technology is progressing. I mean, if you want the internet and websites to still look/function like they did 10 years ago, then i suppose it's all bad. But that's a silly thing to want.

>You could have used the RAM to run other programs
...yeah, but I want to browse the internet. Not browse the internet, play a game, render a 1080p video, write some code in my text editor, watch some porn and torrent all at the same time.

>browsing the web
>decide to render a video
>has to close the browser to free up RAM
Is this bait or are you still in the 90s?

Mostly, yes. Web browsers are the most complex software most people use on their computers, followed by components of office/productivity suites.

NCSA Mosaic took a while to render images at the time.

Netscape was pretty big.

Mozilla was ENORMOUS and took minutes to load for quite a lot of milestones - that's why Phoenix was surprisingly fast.

Opera was an exception, and could run using only 16MB of my 24MB quite well.

Internet Explorer 4 was the first browser I used that I would have ever actually called fast (although it achieved this via trickery).

Yes. Webpages are several MB now, which is insanity. This is mostly the fault of ad networks and Javascript frameworks.

They also do a lot more than they used to.

>being this stupid

>thinking using a 12 year old browser on 2006 the internet is the same as today.
Try using that version of FF on a modern computer, browsing the web in 2018 and report back how much ram it uses.

>expecting computers and software to use the same amount of resources they did 15 years ago

Attached: 1518845382774.png (211x239, 6K)

Filling currently reasonable amounts of system RAM to show far fewer tabs is obviously a regression.

how do you get tabs on the same level as the address bar?

>never shutdown my computer, always suspend (sometimes it doesn't work and shutdowns instead tho)
>never close chrome
>16GB taken up by ~100 chrome tabs
>messenger tab that consumes 400MB for some reason
>some google site (sites.google.com) consuming fucking 1GB despite being just a bunch of text and links
>still have 6GB free (or actually available)
>open a game
>shit runs out of memory because apparently windows can't manage memory and "available" memory isn't really available

I used to browse the web with only 8mb ram on a 486.

Use Qutebrowser and still being under a gig a RAM used

I use Vimb on my gentoo, it barely takes 120MiB of ram

>Now there is WAY more JavaScript-driven sites, where many things are rendered client-side. Not to mention 100 other differences.
NOT OKAY

no
developers don't bother optimizing shit anymore

even browsing in the early 2000s didn’t use 25-40% of my ram with 6 or so tabs open though.

It started even before Quantum and it seems completely random.
Some people experience memory leak, other don't.
The latest update only makes Firefox crash the tabs after a while. If you continue browsing, FF will completely crash with some of your addons getting fucked. I have to reinstall 4chanX everytime it happens.

Nice, currently I'm at ~3GB but the tabs just crashed so it was higher
This was common after a a few hours of browsing ~2 months ago
a.pomf.cat/jdogix.png

I dunno. I've only used opera and Vivaldi.

They always have. Browsers used most of the ram even in the Netscape Navigator Gold days when I had a P1 with 16mb RAM

...but why?

>2005
>512 MB RAM
>keep internet explorer open while playing counter-strike with winamp and yahoo messenger in the taskbar
>plenty of RAM left
No, everything is a bloated piece of shit now.

>Opens Internet Explorer
Funny enough, no

IE's notably shitty parts had nothing to do with memory usage, it was just slow af

>shitty website design
>shitty browsers

>The JavaScript trap
I should be able to selectively choose what software runs on my computer, definitely not everything is allowed to by default free for all.
scripts should be offered separately as an installable userscript, if at all.
your webpage doesn't need to be an 'app'.
html is for text.... fucking TEXT.
if you need to make an app, don't make it in a damn website.

autism

niether repeating digits nor ad hominem attacks are arguments.
software should do one thing and do it well.
there is absolutely no reason for 'apps' to exist within a browser.

>numales now make "desktop" apps using chrome and javascript
the joke that went too far

I wanna fuck this girl.

Underage

>still uses windows

Attached: 1519412790576.png (449x401, 490K)

Bad or good?

Attached: Capture.png (1765x1048, 563K)

old pcs work well on k-meleon.
wtf are you all smoking

also if you have low ram you need a lighter browser,
web pages are still huge.@2GB like facebook and google.
you would want many tabs of these anyway lol

I'm currently om my NX7400 with 4GB ram and i have 7 tab open i'm using FF and windows fucking 10.

OP is a fucking liar
my old ass laptop that is very very old can run this real wel dispite being on a housefire t7200 c2d cpu

Attached: 15yroldLaptop.png (649x592, 24K)

this very good 20tabs under 2GB is very very good.
but then again anime very rarely uses loads of ram anyway.

> every webshite today is mobile-oriented responsive design
We have to go back.

How many tabs could IE6 survive? 3?

Why does all this responsive shit has to be implemented as JS anyway?
Why don't let the mobile browser implement this shit?

Where do you think JS is interpreted? On a client hardware. It doesn't matter one bit if you have to download the script beforehand.

What do you think browser rendering engines are programmed in?

Hint: It's not JS

1080p twitch stream, 2x 1080 youtube videos and 10 other random tabs (heavy sites such as amazon, streaming sites etc) and it uses 2gb.

Flash was worse, but JavaScript wasn't meant to be this fucking bad.

What would the web be like today if Eich hadn’t been excommunicated?

That was only 4 years ago.
Web was already fucking horrible then.

>i have 8 gb and Firefox uses 3-3.5 with 5-6 tabs open. that’s kind of crazy

That IS crazy. I have 16gb and Firefox uses ~1gb with 20+ tabs open, what shitty system/OS are you on ?

>still using firecuck

using opera unironically.

Attached: Screenshot_1.png (679x62, 8K)

I ran a 2GB machine with XP until 2015 and my RAM usage almost never broke 1GB. 600MB was high.
After that it blew up. I have no idea why.

no, they didn't. however, firefox 2 did have a memory leak, which still seems to exist.

No. That started when they started this multi-process shit.

No. And they still don't. I am using chrome with winblows 7 and 4gb ram. I can have as many fucking tabs open as I want and usage never goes above 1gb. There is no excuse for letting your browser hog all your ram, wtf are you all doing?

Unused RAM tends to overheat and blow stuff up.

that's odd. both chrome and firefox quantum just suck up more and more of my 8GB RAM until they crash

Right now Chrome on Linux has a bad GPU memory leak bug that's triggered by certain JS if you go to chrome://flags and turn every type of GPU acceleration on (check chrome://gpu to see what, if anything, you have enabled). You can't have infinitive amounts of RAM regardless of how rich or poor you are. If your GPU has 2 GB or 4 GB or 8 GB doesn't matter when there's a bug makes the browser use everything until there's no more left and it crashes.

Sounds like a (you) problem. My brother uses firefox with a million tabs, 8gb ram, windows 10, and his usage never goes above 2gb either. You all got your browser infected with some shit? I don't understand. Win7/10, chrome/firefox, 4gb/8gb all no problem.

>browser balloons in RAM consumption linearly over the course of some hours
>nearly everyone else except this one special dude reports similar behaviour
>"haha it's just user error you retard"

>You all got your browser infected with some shit?
no, you spastic.

noone gives a flying fuck, a thread died for this. fuckoff, fucktard. go kill yourself. jesus.

I had my browser open for some hours now. Just checked, ram usage actually went down by 0.02gb. I am now actively TRYING to crash it by having several tabs of videos, songs, livestreams, porn (cause fuck it) and heavy websites open and running at the same time. It went up to 2gb. I am sorry but having 6 tabs open with 3-4gb usage is far from normal behaviour. You all MUST be retarded. I see no other explanation.

...

It's a side effect of browsers being practically their own operating system, with a separate process for each tab so that when a tab crashes or freezes, the rest of the browser works fine

good for you. i simply switched to vivaldi and installed the great discarder. RAM usage does grow without limit over time but it's much slower than aforementioned.

browsers have been using more and more ram over the years thanks to caching, addons, and more bloated web pages.

you need 8gb minimum if you want to use chrome with 50+ tabs open.
