I might pick up either a 1.67GHz PowerBook G4 or a comparable ThinkPad. What is the most minimal Thinkpad on the cheap and how easily can it run Free/OpenBSD?
>inb4 use ganoo plus loonix

Welp, touchpad and pointer just completely stopped working on my t420 running w7. I guess I should try reinstalling the drivers right?

I'd go with a Thinkpad x200 instead

Reposting in new bread...

So I have a weird question, with my work-at-home battlestation setup I have my behemoth mining/gaming PC whirring away next to my feet under the desk, and I bought a dock to use with my T450 for my 2 external monitors, as my primary/general purpose computer.

I kinda like being able to snap the thinkpad off & on and have all my programs & everything still be open right where I left it, but I always felt weird just leaving the powerful miner sit there & do its thing (basically idle, as far as me using it goes) and only switching the monitor input to The Beast when it's tiem for gaymen.

Given this configuration, would you all rather use the stationary aircraft carrier PC as your everyday compooter since it's already there, or relegate it to mining/gaming functions while making the thinkpad do full duty as your right hand device? I'm mostly wondering because I need to upgrade my RAM due to my massive Chrome tab whoring habits devouring the full 8gb, which both the T450 and the miner have as their capacity currently. I'm contemplating making the big boy be my main squeeze, upgrading its ram instead of the thinkpad, and downgrade the TP to mobile use only. Probably not though, because I do kinda like the way I have it now. idk.

One of the main compelling reasons for the dock was having the thinkpad act as a (smaller) bonus monitor.

I could of course just run it separately next to the computers powered by the Beast™, but I never understood the appeal of having to manage 2 sets of keyboard+mice on separate windows machines. Is there some awesome advantage to that that I'm missing?

I just feel weird pulling the trigger on some $40 RAM that's DDR3 when it occurred to me that I could throw some more DDR4 into the desktop with the Ryzen 1700, instead of my last-gen T450's i5-5300u. Tell me I'm retarded Jow Forums.

Yeah I have a desktop that I only use for playing games, all other work is done on my t440s via dock connected to the same monitor.

Nothing says "I'm a fucking business man" like docking a Thinkpad, it feels amazing.

8gb is enough for all of my laptop uses. I don't like to have many tabs/programs running at once.

I dont use a keyboard/mouse with my laptop though, would take up a large amount of desk space having 2 sets. I've been using the trackpoint for years.

Is CPU usage in Chrome related in any way to RAM being filled up? I'm watching task manager and it looks like Chrome freezes up when loading big web pages and the CPU spikes to 100%.

Is that the chinkpad CPU buckling under the weight of Chrome (nothing I can do) or would upgrading the RAM definitely take some of the load off?

There should absolutely be no "buckling" when loading webpages with an i5 5300u

What is the memory usage % when it starts freezing up?

91%. 7.0 out of 7.7GB

And seriously? I thought a mobile meme processor should be expected to have problems. For reference though we're talking about 3 windows of 10-15 tabs that I have open in addition to Discord, Pycharm IDE, spotify, evernote, and a bunch of background shit

Well it sounds like you'd benefit from adding more ram to your laptop then.

or "installing a linux distro than can manage memory better than Windows" is what half of the neckbeards here will tell you.

Cool, that's sorta what I thought. I found the identical module to the one preinstalled on ebay for $40, guess I'll make haste with that

I got 500 euros of store credit, what should I grab?

what is libreboot? should I care about it? (fyi I don't own a thinkpad yet and when I do I play to run arch on it)

Well, I'm happy enough with my t430

>no /tpg/ in thread title or description
Fuck you, OP. I had to explicitly search for "thinkpad general" rather than just "tpg" like I'm used to.

>what is libreboot?
Fully free firmware that you can use instead of your BIOS if your machine is compatible.
>should I care about it?
If you care about free software, or are scared about Intel ME or AMD PSP, then you should.

Attached: Literally_retarded.jpg (832x584, 78K)

it's coreboot with tranny bits
no, you shouldn't care
stick to coreboot and remove ME with ME_cleaner, if possible upgrade to a CPU without AMT/"Anti-theft" features/vPro/VT-d(!=VT-x)
if you are going to harvest child porn whilst preparing a nuclear attack against the USA, remove proprietary blobs within coreboot as much as possible (some EC firmware can't be replaced, dgpu generally won't work, use the Intel Native Raminit it parity for your machine is close enough); all of this will still be useless if you don't air gap and emi-shield your device, and still there are quite a few side channels attacks left possible

OwO I have a T530 and it comes with a 7mm drive, even though there's lots of room. Is a 9mm drive compatible?

Is the T60 stuck on 32bit linux or can I use 64bit?

>remove ME with ME_cleaner
Technically you merely "neuter" ME to some extent, as me_cleaner just removes some parts of the blob that aren't necessary to keep the machine running for longer than 30 minutes. Neutered or not, you're dealing with an encrypted blob which does things you don't know about.

>Intel ME is just hanging out, waiting for god knows what sort of commands on undocumented ports
>can be hacked remotely, ring -1 privileges, you'd never have any clue it's happening
>"Yeah but your thinkpad is still vulnerable to CIA glow-in-the-darks listening to your keyboard clicks, so why bother?"

Are you fucking insane? If you have to, get a pi and an SOIC8 clip and GET THAT SHIT OUT OF THERE!

Attached: intel-CVE-2017-5689-1.jpg (1652x806, 221K)

that dude looks like engineering explained

If that doesn't work try booting into a live Linux environment to confirm it works there.

nigger they can literally listen to your cpu ram and track you that way
tranny boot wont save you

What is the Intel Boot Manager fucking shit that takes its sweet time running on reboot?

As far as I can tell it does nothing of importance and now that I've recently plugged an ethernet cable into the dock, it apparently makes itself a hot cup of tea and spends a good minute or two checking some DHCP settings or some shit.

That, along with GRUB makes it take like 5 minutes just to boot into the OS. Can I turn this shit off? Do I need it?

Attached: 23015_image1.jpg (500x198, 27K)

Boot some GNU/Linux distro or even check with a windows installer if they work. If they don't, make sure they weren't disabled in BIOS.

FBI underwear sniffers catching the emi from my LCD or ram is one thing. They're state actors with infinite resources and nothing better to do...fuck em. If they really want you, they'll just seize your shit and plant evidence, or blackmail you. This is literally why the 3-letter agencies were created in the first place.

Intel ME/AMT is an uncontrollable computer, sitting inside your own computer, intercepting and listening to everything. The very thought makes me fucking itch. At some point it comes down to a matter of principal.

what's your opinion on the E480?

Just boot into a live enviroment and find out. 3GB is a hardware limitation on that machine, btw.

Fuck off idab you literal redditor.

New thread without the autism
never make another thread again idab

It should be a rule in /tpg/ saying "Pretend like idab doesn't exist"

>Are you fucking insane? If you have to, get a pi and an SOIC8 clip and GET THAT SHIT OUT OF THERE!
??? Obviously, that's the purpose of coreboot + me_cleaner
>you merely "neuter"
"No"
The standard approach is *code removal* AND set HAP/AltMeDisable bit (to speed up things/remove bogus warnings concerning the missing ME)

But note that Chrome is designed to use up all the ram so even if you have 32GB ram they might just use up all of them?

Or stop overreacting to my posts.

Stop ruining the /tpg/

You're behaving like kids

Correct, he can still run into the same issue, but this way he can have about 30% more tabs/programs running by adding another ram module.

I just bought an i7 x230 for $240, how did I do lads?

Great buy if it's in pristine condition with good battery.

ibabs pls be my e-boyfriend

I'm heterosexual

I do have a Snapchat though, it's idab710420
