Fucking this. VLC is the best on every platform it's available. I like streaming shit from my NAS to my phone without plex or sshfs or any of that shit. It detects my network shares and just works.

Not an argument. How is mpv better? Can I download a mobile version of mpv and open remote files as if they were local, with a coherent interface that even a normie could use? (Anecdotal: my normie, tech-illiterate sister was the one that turned me on to VLC by telling me she could open her files remotely with it when I told her I'd have to come over and set up Plex for her to watch downloaded content from the seedbox/kodi htpc i built for her)

Skipping forward by five seconds is savage. Instead this script allows you to tap or hold the RIGHT key to speed up the playback of the video. After 2.5 seconds the speed begins to decay back to 1x.

I don't know of any media player except for mpv with lua support that makes this sort of thing possible.

Just call it fastfoward.lua or something like that and put it in your /scripts/ directory.
The two bindings are both there at the end:
mp.add_forced_key_binding("RIGHT", "fastforward", fastforward_handle, {repeatable=true} )
mp.add_forced_key_binding("LEFT", "seekback", seekback_handle, {repeatable=true} )

you can change them if you like of course. The reason I bind LEFT is so that I can set the speed back to 1x immediately when the user presses LEFT.

I basically use it whenever I get impatient. The more impatient I am the more rapidly I tap RIGHT and the video speeds up more. I use mpv with youtube-dl a lot and some of the people I watch have a tendency to be long winded sometimes, so it comes in handy frequently.
