I'm downloading a very big torrent. 291gb. Everything is 1080p with high bitrate.
I want to convert everything to 720p and to reduce the file sizes to less than 20% of the original size.
I tried some filles with Avidemux, choose codec NVENC, put around 2000kb of bitrate. Each file is very slow, takes around 2 hours to convert. (GTX 1070)
But then I read somewhere else that NVENC doesn't use b-frames and thus it is not good.
Then I tried StaxRip.
StaxRip I had no idea how to set the bitrate. File ended up being 80% of the original file.
Damn, what is the Jow Forums recommended way of converting videos?
ffmpeg probably. I just used Handbreak for the few files I needed converting.

Handbrake is what I use for everything

The real Jow Forums way is to use ffmpeg in the commandline. If you're only slightly Jow Forums you'll use Handbrake.

What's the audio codec?

Is HEVC really better than X264?
Dominic Flores
For low bitrates, yes.
Brandon Cooper
I was choosing AAC.

wait for av1 encoders to come out next year

>For low bitrates, yes.
How much would be low?
Leo Ward
That's good. Opus is a bit better for low bitrates if you don't have any compatibility issues with it. For 2 channel you could do 100kbps Opus and it's unlikely you could hear a difference.

20% of anything is probably going to be low enough for x265's efficiency to outweigh x264's optimization.
Matthew Green
>For low bitrates, yes. Why would lower bitrates make it a better option?
x265 smooths. At low bitrates this helps, and the codec is also more efficient. At high bitrates it still smooths past the level that x264 is transparent.

I can't wait.
What I want to convert to 720p are animelo live videos.
animelo 2012-2016 = 290gb.
I am also downloading 2017, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006.
That's more than 500gb of files. I want everything to be no larger than 80gb.
