I for one use gnome on my 4k desktop as it scales nicely with high dpi.
On my ml cluster it's i3 as I just need to switch between different output windows while keeping the ram usage down.
On my laptop I use KDE, so tech illiterates at work can use it too at presentations and such.

The /g's favourite would only work if we were indeed a single homogeneous group, but we aren't and never will be.
