I've been trying to set Windows Media Player 7 as the default for opening mp3, RMI and MID audio and midi files but have had no luck, and I cannot select "open with" in the right-click menu, how do i allocate a program to open files by default?

In Windows 98 "open with" is hidden unless you hold shift while opening the context menu.

that's the less reliable way to do it since you have to do it for every single extension
go to tools -> options -> formats
check the boxes you need (MIDI and MP3) then click apply.
if they're already checked. uncheck them, click apply, then check them, and click apply.

in windows before Vista, press shift while you right-click to get additional menus (including open with)
imho WMP 6.4 > 9 > 7.1
but that's just me
maybe that's why mpc and mpc-hc decided to keep the wmp 6.4 interface, eh?
why use this over qemu + kvm?
genuinely curious
I am provisioning for you an entire suite of tools and some small games for windows98 mined from my dusty archives.
who runs win98 in 2018 out of actual need
