Games were made by hobbyist tier programmers back then. What they did is impressive only with that context in mind.

Comparatively, some programmers accomplished amazing things with the little computing power that they had, but from a technical standpoint (many) modern games are technologically much more amazing.
Just ask anybody from back then who is still working on games and the like.

I did 16 units at a university and when I submitted my final paper for the last class, I opened up a videogame and started playing at 6pm. I didn't stop until 8am the next day.

Partook in gamergate and everything. Wasn't until I got an actual job and had an interesting, busy, and varied life that I stopped having time to play games. It just seems kinda pointless now. Why spend 8 hours binging Morrowind when I could learn a new programming language or screw around with building a mail server or try out a new exploit in my homelab?

Just all seems kinda pointless now. I still like playing video games, but there's just too much to learn and do to really binge like I used to. Once your life starts to get half-as-interesting as the people you're pretending to be in a game, it just loses a lot of it's appeal.

I'm in the same boat. For me I started getting into 3D, 3D-scanning and gamedev five years ago as a hobby and now I find the same joy in creating games as I did playing them. Everything is moving so fast that just trying to keep up with the developments provides plenty of new stuff to learn every day. I love graphics and physics and pushing the limits of what's possible.

Not going to lie, I'm a little sad. I kind of miss being a part of that culture, and I think if a big release came out that I was interested in, I might take a 4 day weekend off and really play the hell out of it. I miss a lot of the drama and silliness of it all, but exposing myself to the outside world, becoming a productive person, and moving to a big city have all kind of made gaming feel a lot less important to me.

I fucking hate modern gaming. I haven't bought a "AAA" game since 2003 and only played the odd indie/small game since then. Recently i did get into PUBG to socialise with coworkers, since everyone and their dog play it. It's actually pretty cool, reminds me of battlefield 1942 (stupid antics) but im disgusted by the lootbox shit in it. Some of my mates have bought/sold lootbox shit into the $100's.

I didn't start playing due to peer pressure - they go through phases of different AAA games that i always rejected, until i decided i wanted to form stronger bonds with them - and this is what they do together. We'll all stop playing it soon when they move onto the next game.
