This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
Well, my Vostok SE020 finally made it to Canuckistan, thankfully. Now to see how long it takes to get through the den of vipers that is Canada customs...
> Wore it three times this month (though never previous) I guess so, yeah. I kind of wonder what the right strategy is for a good rotation.
Brayden Kelly
Personally I refuse to have a strategy. I wear whichever watch of mine I want, for as long as I feel like, and switch only because I feel like, never because I "should".
If they send it back to Russia, they're doing you a favour.
Juan Bell
Nah, it's a very functional, highly legible design and actually has a unidirectional rotating bezel. As long as there isn't some major defect with it, I don't see why I wouldn't be happy with it.

>low beat >non hacking >less accurate than guessing the time based on the sun's position
Landon Scott
I'm aware of the drawbacks of the design, and I'm actually quite curious to see what results my timegrapher will show for it, and how much improvement in worn performance I'll be able to get from carefully regulating it.
Look, I have lots of more expensive and more accurate mechanical movements, but I really like the design of the SE020 and it's cheap, so I bought it for fun.
Is the tisell flieger really that small? I might actually cop
Charles Cruz
I've been thinking of getting a Tisell flieger for a few months now, to 'scratch' the flieger bug. Do you like yours? How's it holding up? Is it the 40mm with Miyota, or the 43mm with Seagull movt? Do you hate the lume? (I know they use the inferior one, so I'm wondering if it bothers you)
Every few weeks I go back and forth on it...thank goodness they don't have any in stock or I probably would have bought the damn thing already...
Yeah I like mine, I only just got it though. It's 40mm with the Miyota 90S5 movement. The lume is pretty nice actually, shines pretty bright in the dark.
>scum I'm wearing more than you make in 3 months while walking through a ghetto at 1am, I'm untouchable. I could kill you in the street and no one would do anything about it.
It could also be some cheap clone or one of the other Casios that are similar to the F91W. Either way, basically impossible to tell what model it is, but that is definitely a Casio-style band.
Three poor people just walked past while talking about weed, I was expecting to get glassed, but they asked if I was okay even though I was obviously richer than them. I'm pretty humbled desu, kind of regret not asking if they were going to smoke up.
Mdv is not auto but I would recommend. Has pretty much become my weekend and fuck about watch since I don't have to care one bit about it.
Gabriel Robinson
The only one really worth having us the iwc. I guess I could do the breitling as well but that is it. No interest in tag.
Jose Cook
Thanks; it's always good to have real-world feedback.
I love the simplicity of the aesthetic...but I'm not willing to go $900+ for it, hence the Tisell option. But I prefer the 43mm in terms of size although the 40 is easier to get.
>iwc >"No, it's not a royal oak. It's something better for less" >It's not better >It has a meme'd up eta
Jackson Hall
This watch is so close to being "the one". The one watch I wear 4 or 5 weekdays of the week for the rest of my life. If only it >was 40 mm >has a ceramic bezel >didn't have the clasp extension for wetsuits
Huh, that is weird, I never realized the A158 was thinner. I guess the A168's module is thicker because of the EL function, while the 158's side-mounted LED takes up less space.
Dylan Thomas
does this imply that he has a fake Seiko or was it simply changed to Seyko to make the joke without invoking a trademark?
Elijah Smith
Pretty sure it's a joke that he has a fake and doesn't realise it. He's seen at some point wearing what looks like a SNAF03. He also wore a Timex.
Depends. Are you paying the same price for either? If so, get the polar; it has more functions (date + GMT).
I've never been a fan of the no-date sub though...I'm sure it's a fine watch, but I don't see the point in NOT having a date if it's not a problem to have one. And if you don't like the cyclops, go for the older Sea Dweller (I think the new one has a cyclops though...)
Well, I didn't mean to get one of the double-reds...they're absurdly expensive, and they're not necessarily going to be in this good condition.
According to chrono24, you could get an old normal sea-dweller for 6200 or so. It would be a better watch than the sub no-date, and more iconic than the explorer 2. If you're looking used, then these things are possible.
I know, and I understand. There's no problem having a clean dial. But considering that user was asking between two watches, one of them with date and one without, I think it's a reasonable thing to talk about.
Regarding my not seeing the point of having a no-date when having a date on the same design isn't a problem, it's about engineering. The date sub is the norm, it's the one that sells the most; the no date is, functionally, a step down because you're losing something. You gain a clean face...and you lose the date. That seems strange to me, because the clean face of the sub is not that much of a huge improvement.
Record and playback frame rates? I can do 960/24 so 40x slower than real time, will have to try that out tomorrow. A 4Hz movement means the second hand does four ticks per second, right?
Grayson Stewart
how big is it? when did you buy it?
John Price
I don't know to be honest. My phone does it all. I believe it plays at 1/8 speed. A 4hz traditional mechanical movement ticks 8 times per second. See the pastebin for more information on hz and vph.
This is a 6hz=43200vph movement at 1/8 speed, with a basic quartz watch in the background for reference.
if the choice is between a pre-maxi explorer ii and a maxicase nodate sub i'd go explorer ii.
Carson Rodriguez
If you're at 1/40 realtime there may not be much to see in a traditional mechanical watch. Maybe a show motion video of the escapement if you can get it.
>A 4hz traditional mechanical movement ticks 8 times per second Yeah that makes sense, I forgot it'd tick twice per beat.
What watch is that and how does the mechanism work?
Sony RX100 IV. The res is low but usable with decent light and still fun to play with. What frame rates are you using?
Yeah I'll try that too.
What are you guys using to make webms? I've tried online-convert.com but it's a pain trying multiple times to get it under 4MB so I'd prefer something local.
Just bought another f91-w today, since my ex-gf stole the one I had since I was a kid. Fucking sucked having to replace that old hardware. At least I didn't break the bank replacing the thing. Time to break it in.
