This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
The 1946 all steel Stowa I got from a German craigslist for just 30€ just arrived. Never thought 34 mm would look this nice on the wrist. Fucking love it.
For 30€ it's really good, the case is in perfect shape. I don't care much about the lume but it's definitely a relume since it's very bright in the dark. It's running a bit fast, +5s in 4h.

Orient-fucker here. Blog time: Decided to wear my just repaired, by me, Japanese wristwatch to japanese language class today. I knew that we are about to learn all the 時's and 分's today. So it seemed like a great idea. However, I banged my watch to a door on the way like a top retard. Seconds hand fell off. So much for having a nice day.
After the lesson I took it to a watchmaker (~scam artist/con-man). He pit the hand back on but fucked up the the keyless work in the meanwhile. The keyless work was the thing, I repaired. It only took 4 fucking hours. Now I have to take it apart again. Fuck me dead.
Got this for about eleven bucks on the fleamarket this weekend. Apart from the fucked up dial and the deep scratches on the crystal it's in remarkably good cosmetic condition (though the ultrasound seems to have taken off part of the bezel paint) and the movement runs pretty good pre-servicing too!
This is my fourth Amphibia (third working one though) and I kinda intend to give this one a military theme, with some fabric strap and some militaristic-style dial. Though I might just keep the current dial, since it looks crazy.
Why do so many fat people care about watches? Clearly you don't care how you look.

Here in Canada it's normal to be fat and women consider it sexy

That's a nice watch, but seriously consider replacing those hands.
Blake Miller
Can you swap movements between watches? Like, could I theoretically put an ETA into a Seiko or a Rolex? I’m guessing it might need a change to the dial and the cradle?
It would be a ton of work as the dials and hands wouldn't fit, you'd probably need a custom crown, and a custom spacer and mounting solution inside the case.
Landon Torres
Got this fairly cheap, but it always completely stops when it's trying to change date. If I move the crown to adjust the time it starts running again, so I'm sure it still has some power. If I move the crown ever so slightly in the wrong direction it stops again. Haven't brought it to a watchmaker yet though.
Oh and it also changes date by turning it the wrong direction, similar to that Orient one of you posted.
That is one really nice seiko 5. Where you got it?
Henry Jenkins
Thanks user, I found it on eBay.

I can't now.

I also have a Bagelsport, would you prefer that?
Carter Phillips
I would. have you seen all the brands that make bagelsport homages? they must be doing something right

All AD watches has a ID-number am I right? And how do I check this up so that I can know it is the real watch that the seller says it is?
Leo Hill
Opinions on the Omega X-33? (new and old gen) Maybe the new one is overpriced, but an HAQ (20spy) titanium ana digi watch that also looks good is pretty rare. (Also NASA/ESA certified for use in space)
dont care what other people say, the cyan/teal scuba dude dial is pure aesthetic

Made this frankencasio a while back with some spare ones i got from a friend (for free) Has anyone attemepted to pluto mod a F91 w? I'm tempted to do it just for shits and giggles and to practice my PCB making skills
>I like it. How could you not? The silly fork hand kills it for me.

Do you usually wear wristwatchs on your boots? Not judging just asking.

I've got the same watch with a black bezel, it's a decent beater that I wear most days for work. While I'm not big in on the da comrade circlejerk I don't get the Amphibia hate either, they're OK watches for the price and more interesting than a Seiko 5
What the fuck happened to commie Vostok dials on Ebay? It used to be full with them, now I can barely find one or two soviet Amphibia dials, and most are for the 22xx.
Are there no nice military style nu-dials? Going metro is cool like any case. Also which case number is that?
Levi Kelly
I don't really want a "Made in Russia" dial on a commie watch. Also most dials are for the date version and mine is non-date.
>Also which case number is that? Mine or the Metro? Mine I don't know, it's generally referred to as the octagon case. The Metro watch isn't a real model, it's just made to look kinda slav.
Knowing that pretty much all mechanical movements in watches cheaper than $10k are largely machine made, how does it make sense to buy one over a quartz?
You're not getting any of the romantic old-world handwork anyway. You're getting a movement that's pretty much made in the exact same way as a quartz movement, only vastly inferior in terms of performance and much more fragile.
Julian Sanders
> tl;dr > I try to justify being poor.
Carson Lee
I have 6-7k Euros lined up for a watch.
Luke Lewis
>pretty much all mechanical movements in watches cheaper than $10k are largely machine made
But it's true. Look up videos on movement production/assembly for instance by Panerai, Omega, Breitling, ... All the usual suspects in that range. Rolex too, though they don't allow people to film I think.
No. I'm either getting a cheap(er) quartz like a Tuna or Breitling Aerospace, or I'm saving up for something like a Lange, Moser, ... but only when I'm old enough to wear a dress watch all day.
