Use flags are my killer feature
> to the minimautist even gnu is bloat
Have you ever had a look at the source of any GNU program?
pic related
comments and features are bloat, kys
I can't believe you've use your comptuer for real work and not encounter a myriad of dependency errors that count on the existence of GNU toolkit. I don't like bloat either but I have to do things on my computer and not just look at it.
>what is POSIX compliance
>what is BusyBox
yes, useless features not run by 99% of people in a given year are bloat, user
neither does your ereader need to send emails
The best part is you legitimately get to chime in whenever someone posts the GNU+Linux pasta
If you're making open source software it makes sense to comment the shit out of everything so completely unrelated programmers can read your code and expand on it if they want
why does arch exist when alpine exists?
>features
Such as? It's a simple program meant to concatenate strings, not a entire new OS. And guess what, both do it just fine.
I'm not OP, I do not use alpine because I need to get shit done, just like you, which means that I need to live with GNU stuff. Doesn't mean that it isn't bloat though.
Yes, comments are a good thing, but useless comments for code that shouldn't have even been written ends up being bloat and an eyesore for anyone that tries to work on it.
the difference is plan9's cat doesn't need comments because it's not 900% longer than it needs to be
lmaoing @ ur logic
arch is the finest example of an os built for people who want to be cool but don't know how to compile a kernel. It is neither productive nor slender. It breaks down while breaking the unix philosophy. People who want to get shit done use debian or red hat. Stallmanites willing to take their time and trim off the fat use gentoo/alpine. People who both don't know how to use linux and want to post in the screenshot thread use arch. That's why "btw i use arch" is such a meme. It's an OS for all the kids who want to put the cool lunix operating system, launch it three times for their friends in the playground, and never use it again.
>features are bloat
it would be very awkward if the bload didn't add any features
in case of GNU it's pretty common case
Tell me what cat -sTn does without looking at the man page. When is the last time you used any of those options?
Wtf am I reading
why would you want to know what cat -sTn does without looking at the man page? you are not SUPPOSED to know what they all do, you are supposed to check if there is something you can use in there, so as to make your life easier, instead of having to think up of how to program/cobble it yourself
>having software in your repos means it's bloated
Congrats OP, you are the dumbest motherfucker I've seen on this board yet.
debian and red hat are company-based so it makes sense if lots of companies use it
I use Alpine for all of my docker images on my server.
For my desktop I'm not using that shit, the AUR is too handy to me, personally.
The point here is you never use cat with special arguments; you have a different program if you need formatting or whatever the fuck sTn does.
>Why aren't you use Alpine Linux user?
Because Ubuntu fill all my needs.
Well, maybe some of the users. I use Arch because of the AUR repo, not to show off.
I am using it much less since I became a Python/Conda nigger, however...
Clearly they are trying (and succeeding) far harder than 9fags.
>debian is ubuntu
faggot
canonical's distro is debian-based
>another router os
how about no.
Why does it have mpv in its repos
That doesn't mean debian is backed by a company, fucking dumbass.
why is void's package manager in alpine repos
>kernel is patched with an unofficial port of grsecurity/PaX
apk add linux-vanilla
apk del linux-hardended
whyyyy
Because it's not a desktop distro. It's meant for servers and routers. That's why it only has ESR Firefox, no tor browser, and desktop applications aren't high priority.
Stop shilling this distro. People are going to fall for the alpine meme and waste their time.
That doesn't change a fact that it's preferred by a company, fucking dumbass.
Less software than Void.
Worse PM than xbps.
Strrnge version system.
>he wants the pedo browser in the repos
okay hun
no broadcom wireless drivers for my laptops chipset. otherwise i'd be using it
I've seen that.
Doesn't support mine
>tfw BCM43142
linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net
So, which os you use anyway
Oh god i can write a better cat
arch. it's broadcom-wl drivers support BCM43142.
but i really like how light alpine is
What is the problem with systemd?
I think it's for people that want to build void packages, see
github.com
Buy a different laptop then
No, you use xbps-src for that.
maybe sometime. shouldnt it be possible to rewrite the PKGBUILD from the AUR to an APKBUILD to get the drivers working?
Broadcom is pretty cancer.
Been thinking about using it for virtual machines and containers. Omnios for the main system and storage, KVM and Zones with Alpine for my regular Linux based services. I usually use CRUX, but tempting to try other simple solutions too, + Alpine seems more suited for container and VM use.
it is too large to be audited
>u.h
>libc.h
>literally mental illness
please
>Stallmanites use gentoo, a distro that RMS doesn't approve of
>Stallmanites use alpine, a distro without GNU tools, Stallman's biggest achievement
you're retarded
i want to use alpine guys
idk if i should
Use Void Linux MUSL then.
>For my desktop I'm not using that shit, the AUR is too handy to me, personally.
tell me a package it doesn't have
pic rel bitch
>Void
>founder left
ew no fuck that hipster trash
>ew no fuck that hipster trash
Well, I guess that's a reasonable argument not to use one of the best distributions today.
>Well, I guess that's a reasonable argument not to use one of the best distributions today.
that made no sense you dumb cunt
> Why aren't you use Alpine Linux user?
Because
>no systemd
I'm not an old-timer and can learn new better things.
I am using it user!
What is backwards compatibility? The key goal of the gnutilities are to be drop in replacements for other tools that people have used. GNU adds features so people can switch off of proprietary.
Because we base everything off a standard set of images internally which are based on CentOS.
bro post more screenshots so these plebs can see what alpine is all about
> non bloat repos
Unfortunately not a big one.
> no systemd
I want systemd, it has been extremely useful so far.
> blazing fast package manager
I think they actually did well there. Even the package source format (to build binary packages) isn't bad. It's much better than apt and friends.
> no GNU bloat
That's not good. I don't mind musl by default, but actually I also want GNU or whatever as-needed.
arch is so bloat
alpine isn't
lmao just imagine how unsafe the "elegant" code on the left is
i bet there are so many vulns in it since it doesn't make sure the memory is safe
the real solution is to rewrite cat in rust
>tiny repo
>I-I-IT'S NOT MUH BLOAT!!!!!!!1!1!!!!1!!!!1
maybe because the devs know that their repo is too tiny that they allow users to install software from void's repo
>>tiny repo
>>I-I-IT'S NOT MUH BLOAT!!!!!!!1!1!!!!1!!!!1
god i hate people like you
alpine has packages and i proved it
sigh
Type like an aussie but have the shitposting prowess of a fucking leaf. You should be ashamed.
You do realize that comments and white space are ignored by the compiler right?
The difference in compile time with the added character verification is maybe several hundred cycles.
Your brain can't even send a signal to your eyes to start blinking, the time scale is so indescribably miniscule.
>kernel is patched with an unofficial port of grsecurity/PaX
That’s terrifying
>That’s terrifying
open source is supposed to be terrifying you windows cunt
welcome to the real world
>Anyone critisizing open source must be a Windows fanboy
>Running “unofficial ports” of dead projects is totally fine
>dead projects
are you talking about void?
grsecurity has been dead for a long time.
Are you people seriously so retarded you can't go into /etc/apk/repositories and you enable what you want?
>And guess what, both do it just fine.
the gnu one is faster though. it calls through a lot of abstraction and shit more for copyright reasons than anything else but the underlying io stuff in gnu cat is faster than that plan 9 piece of shit with a simple 8192 byte buffer.
and yet there was a time were people needed that shit for dubious reasons. the extra code does little to nothing to the binary's size anyhow.
This guy uses alpine
so the short version of cat cant do this:
echo hello | cat
how do I install steam on alpine?
get a ps4 retard
I've used it for docker images. I didn't know people used it for anything else.
no MIPS support
what is that
sounds like bloat
What are you doing on a technology board?
>ps4
>pay for online
>get jewed on game prices
the state of alpinetards
But it can, you dummy. The program is so simple you should understand that if no argument is given, the program will read on stdin.
if GNU is so terrible, why does everything use it?
checkmate, FreeX
>if GNU is so terrible, why does everything use it?
Same reason everyone uses windows, iOS and systemd.
>Requirements
> GNU bash
> xbps >= 0.46
Can you read?
still cheaper than a decent videocard senpai
I don't want to go without systemd. I don't run gentoo without systemd as well. It's too good to drop.
can i install latest gnome/kde on it, and will it work?
does it have non-free multimedia codecs?
does it have community or third party repos for popular software like vscode, sublime, discord, skype, steam, themes, icon packs, etc?
does it have a community at all, which can help you out in with problems, track down and report bugs in the OS, provide a wiki?
all of the above is what makes an appealing distro thats worth sticking to
otherwise you might as well just use a digital photoframe with an anime picture and call it the best absolute bloat-free setup.
I bet GNU Cat is faster. Anyone care to do a test with pv(1)?
