Homebrew is a community mainly centered around novelty and hacking, not making the devices general purpose, aside from porting emulators for retro games. They also require you to avoid updating the firmware, which, at the very least, may prevent you from running any official software.
I will be very impressed if anyone ever gets a Linux distro running on them though. It would also be hilarious if the original handheld video game piracy scene made a comeback, if only because Nintendo would lose its collective shit.

Fact to the matter is BSD does not provide any (or enough) benefits over Linux to prompt people to switch.
