Depression caused by excessive use of social media and technolo/g/y...

Depression caused by excessive use of social media and technolo/g/y. I know it's not 100% Jow Forums related but it's the best place to discuss about it.

So, is this true that Internet, social media and technology gives people depression? It artifically provides what normal human needs, which is self-actualization, esteem and love/belonging. Do you feel damaged by use of Internet, user?

not everyone uses social media

90% of teens use social media. I think at some point this number is dropping as people realize virtual friends != real friends and they lose purpose of having facebook or whatever.

also my question was about Internet, not social media.
>protip: Jow Forums counts as social media.

>self-actualization
>social media and gadgets provide self-actualization
>self-actualization

fucking LOL

>implying I've even made it to the yellow part of the pyramid

>self-actualization
>Expressing one's creativity
>social media provide self-actualization
Yep.

i come here to escape reality so whatever

>>Expressing one's creativity
You don't express you creativity on Faceberg. That would be playing an instrument, drawing, painting, etc. What you do on Kikebook is whoring for attention.

>What you do on Kikebook is whoring for attention.
Are you trying to describe your activity on facebook?
Because as far as I'm concerned people post original content on it. Yes, sometimes for attention, but it's from definition a form of creativity.

Just stop using social media. It's not as useful as people tend to believe.

>It artifically provides what normal human needs, which is self-actualization, esteem and love/belonging.
The point is that it does exactly the opposite. What you consider "normal" online is merely a facade these people create for their online personas, while in real life they seldom care that much about fb and similar sites. They're likely using it as a tool of communication / ego stroking just because it's convenient and easy to use for the technologically illiterate, even though it is completely shit. No self-esteem or love rises from social media, merely cheap dopamine feedback loops.

Nope.
Social media activities qualify as "self-expression" as much as not wiping your ass after you take a shit.

This guy gets it.

>self-actualization

>Nope.
Jow Forums is social media. Post OC on Jow Forums is a self-expression. Just because you don't use it that way doesn't mean other people don't.

I'm just an user trying to give helpful advice to a fellow user. I hate most social media with a passion and I believe most people would just be better off without it, so it feels good to blow off some steam every now and then without the dopamine fueled ego worship.

Why can't you admit that it's shit if it makes you depressed? Why cling to such a useless thing?

i think that the depressed use it but depression isn’t caused by it. probably does not help them trough

Social media was touted as the tool that will bring people closer. Yet somehow it just alienated us.

seems like being closer to there food pictures and selfi stuff isn't the driving force behind a friendship.

Shut the fuck up you have no clue what you're talking about.

Social media. The key word "media" not "social"

>16 year old armchair psychologist demonizes le ebul technology
every day there's a thread like this somewhere on Jow Forums

>So, is this true that Internet, social media and technology gives people depression?
Social media does now, but only because it went from forums, image boards, and IRC chats about hobbies to people posting their whole lives on FaceBook/Twitter/Snapchat. The forums which once encouraged free thought and speech have slowly been replaced by hogbox Reddit trash, where dissenting voices are downvoted to the bottom of the shitpile.

>Do you feel damaged by use of Internet, user?
I feel damaged and atomized by society as a whole. The new culture of the mainstream internet is a soul crushing corporate cesspool, but it's still an extension of the offline culture we see day to day.

It's not the technologies themselves which are to blame, but rather an Orwellian flavor of neo-Marxism which has seeped into everything nice, including the internet. Even then, only the framework of this system is Marxist. Marx himself would be fucking appalled with all of the gender and racial politics being inserted into everything. Even the software itself which all of this IT infrastructure is built on isn't excluded from this sort of mind poison. Take a look at FreeBSD and code of conduct debacle. This shit is getting to a point where these insane SJWs are eating their own.

Don't try to treat the symptoms. Go to the root of the sickness.

The fuck are you talking about, idiot?
I've asked two questions that you failed to answer so far. I've never demonized anything. Fucking asshole.

Troughout last few months I've slowly started logging my self off internet for various reasons (privacy, depresion, ...). I can now say with 100% certanty that social media makes you depressed(Jow Forums included). Using internet to replace human interaction just makes you sad, none of you can argue with empirial things. I've already turned off facebook, muted messanger fully and encouraged people to mail me if they need something. The next obvious steps are to completely delete messanger and facebook profiles, to stop using Instagram and ofcourse stop using this wretched website. Only than will I be able to enjoy human interaction the way it's supposed to be.

Only thing I hate is that social media is actively working on making you stay and continue using them. Facebook today only survives on the fact that you simply need it or you don't exist. They are encouraging buissnes related things to move to facebook and force you to use it for practical reasons. Most of my university important news I find trough facebook, while my mail is full of uni spam. I've even noticed professors putting results in facebook groups instead of mailing it or putting it on a website. And to think I study electrical engineering. Fucking SAD. I don't want to use facebook and I don't want to be forced to do so. Now I'm angry

>stop using Instagram
Are you 16 years old?

fuck off to Jow Forums with your retarded garbage

Social media, yes
Technology, no

how is social interaction with your friends, family and other peers causing depression in your opinion? if i use my phone and call people all day long instead of writing them on whatever social media platform, will i also get depressed? what if i write them physical letters instead of text messages? should we ban all forms of communication?

Don't know where you live but here 90% of people use instagram. IMO it's what facebook was supposed to be - just people posting pictures. Unfortunately they added those cancerous stories and chatting and people are just making it worse day by day. Therefore, I am deleting it soon

>here 90% of people use instagram
Here 90% of people don't even know what an instagram might be.

It's not the communication part that makes you depressive you stupid cunt. It's sitting for hours and scrolling trough news feed and posting pictures only to get that dopamine ahem ahem likes rush. There are genuine people who are addicted to it, in fact they make the majority

Social media isn't always global, where I live 99% of people don't use twitter, in Russia no one uses facebook and where you are no one uses Instagram. It's just the way it is

so if i hang out with my friends in person all day and show them pictures i've taken on my last holiday trip to get some kind of positive response out of them, i might get depressed? that's a scary thought, i'll never share my pictures and personal opinions with my friends again. on- or offline.

Have you ever used social media? Do you realize how it's being used? It is not being used for "social interaction" anymore. If you go on any form of social media (twitter, facebook, instagram, and snapchat) it is filled with people trying to gain validation from other people. There is actually zero one on one "social interaction" with people anymore and if it is, they use it as a chance to be self centered. Any time I have tried to have a conversation with a person and have "social interaction", the messages only last for about 5 minutes and one or the other ends up ignoring it and acting like they forgot to look at it. Before everyone was using smart phones, I felt like I had better social interactions but now that it's populated with literally every idiot on earth, it's difficult to have genuine social interaction. I have found myself feeling depressed just because of twitter. It's unhealthy and I have decided to delete most of my social media and attempt interact with people who would benefit my life, rather than constantly reading the same narcissistic tweets from people from high school that treated me like shit anyways. Text message is a little different but same goes for the idea that you will text someone a couple times and someone ends up ignoring, gaining nothing from the social interaction.

Jow Forums+Jow Forums+Jow Forums is the ultimate combination of boards if you want to keep yourself safe, sane, in touch and in good health.
Technology is completely essential to the modern world and you're going to go nowhere fast if you try to keep yourself unplugged at all times (self-actualization).
Keeping fit is one of the best ways to stave off depression. It improves your self image and self-esteem and keeps your brain chemistry in check. It also gives you a chance to just blank your mind an keep focused on the music in your headphones and keeping your legs running or the iron pumping. (physiological, esteem)
Weapons are the single best way for an independent, adult, sane individual to keep himself safe in a world seemingly going increasingly insane. It doesn't have to be a gun but you'd be a fool not to have some kind of plan if your house gets burgled while you're in it. (safety)
As for love and belong, only you can say where you belong or who you love, but Jow Forums has some ideas.

You sound like an addict defending his addiction

Its an MK, just make irl friends instead of internet fwends

>It's sitting for hours and scrolling trough news feed
Yes.
>and posting pictures only to get that dopamine ahem ahem likes rush
No.

I don't post anything on FB and haven't for years yet I'm still depressed. Not because I'm sitting and scrolling for hours (which I don't do anyway) or because I get a dopamine rush (which again, I don't do). It's just this ugly contrast between me and my """friends""" in terms of success. They're basically all living the dream, adventures after adventures, party after party, girlfriend after girlfriend. It's just so tiresome and depressing when you compare you life to theirs, it's genuinely making me mad. I know for most people it's a facade and it's all fake and their actual lives are not so great, but still, I can't help but think that while everyone else is having the best years in their lives, I'm basically a basement dwelling incel. Social media is legit making me antisocial because of the depressions it causes.

>it is filled with people trying to gain validation from other people
just like the real world.

>Any time I have tried to have a conversation with a person and have "social interaction", the messages only last for about 5 minutes and one or the other ends up ignoring it and acting like they forgot to look at it.
maybe you're a boring person and people don't enjoy talking to you? ever considered that? of course not, it's the fault of those other people, those narcissistic fucks.

and you conveniently keep ignoring my point. what exactly is the difference between online and offline social interaction? why does one form "cause depression" while the other form is considered healthy? please explain.

and what makes you so sure that using the internet is a cause and not just a symptom of the disease?

>ME ME ME
> I AM NOT DEPRESSED FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
>ME ME ME ME ME LOOK AT ME
> I AM THE EXAMPLE LOOK AT ME ME ME
> I DON'T DO WHAT OTHER PEOPLE DO
>ME ME ME

No one was refering to you nigger. The majority of people post daily on social media

also, just get out - meet people - party - drink - rave - whatever - interact socially - do what other people do. If you're a basement dweller you're definetely addicted to some extend. Spending hours on this websites makes you an addict too

I guess you're right, it probably has all to do with the type of people you interact with. I can't stand going out with a group of people who only want to drink and gossip, it makes me depressed and think I have shitty friends in my life. I guess social media is a target for that idea because it's a lot easier to lay in bed and pull out your phone vs. making plans and getting people together to go out and do something and spend money.

that would be a valid point if only people actually only posted vacation pictures on social media and you couldn't like. Instead this is what an average facebook wall looks like

I said the exact opposite you dumb fucking faggot. Do you realize that the Anonymous people in this thread are not the same person, right?

>I've asked two questions that you failed to answer
