am I able to find a cheap thinkpad with 4gb ram and multicore processing?

I don't have it handy.

But its a prototype T61 that I believe is on display in a design museum, that might help you find it.

Not in the display driver properties. Look in the power profiles or equivalent. It has all settings for behavior when plugged into mains, on battery, if battery < X% and so on. Start by setting params on battery only to exact settings as ac power and work your way back.
Look into hijackthis utility and, also, if your regfu is uptopar search the registry and remove, disable, etc. keys specific to that device.

Whiter than you, mutt

I want a laptop for the sole intent to watch videos in bed (whether that be anime, porn, youtube, or whatever), some note taking at college, and some light 3D modelling/animation. Maybe some light gayming (might have a few roguelites/likes in mind, nothing intensive) too, but nothing really intensive.
I want it to last for at least 3 hours unplugged. A lot of the classes I've got ahead of me are generally 1-1.5 hour chunks, but one of them (networking) has no wall sockets for use, takes a little under 3 hours, and is otherwise essentially blocked off from the rest of the campus because muh solitary confinement or something.
I'd like something cheap, but also powerful enough to do anything I want (Again, nothing super intense like playing the latest meme games, just modelling/animation with a little light gayming sprinkled on top).
W530? Used gayman laptop? Try and find some cheap Dell Precision Laptop? T430?
Please help a retard out. Please help me. I love you guys.

for modeling and gayms, a W530 is indeed your best bet

What's a general price for a W520/30? I just want to make sure I'm not paying too much (Have seen one for $800, which I feel would be a tad high desu)

Which model of Tp is this? I can’t tell from the photo

X230

Why is this battery so cheap?
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/282423427417

It’s a chink battery. Some say buying non-oem’s are just as good at holding a charge if not better than genuine

Alright, I guess I'll buy this one and see for myself. I hope it won't explode in my backpack heh.

"We sell brand new replacement/compatible batteries that are manufactured to meet or exceed the specifications of the original brand manufacturer. If the part number of your original battery or machine model is not listed in our description, it may still fits your model well, so please feel free to contact us to confirm the compatibility."

fuck you thinkpads suck ass
ps your moma gay

Goo gone is pretty good at removing stuff like that, you can maybe find it in the cleaning supplies section of a grocery store, or almost definitely at a hardware store

Getting a thinkpad T470 assigned from work.
Which linux distro works best out of the box? I'd prefer something debian-based.
In particular, I am concerned about WWAN working.

T60p (UXGA, 2GB RAM, FireGL) with Win7
W520 (FullHD and almost maxed out, 8GB RAM) with gentoo

And for shits and giggles: HP nc4010 (1GB RAM) with gentoo

X220 here. I'll be taking on some extra work around the Fall that will allow me to either upgrade my X220 into beast mode, or grab a newer model. The X1 Carbon is tempting, but the newest ones are more money than I have, and I'm scared to buy one used for reasons that should be obvious to most people in this thread.

For the X220, here's my proposed upgrade list
256GB SSD - Probably like $100
Better wifi card - Around $30
Authentic 9-cell 44++ battery - $70 to $100 depending on market
New fan & paste - Around $30

So, the upgrade budget is reaching toward $300 territory. Worth it, or should I just grab one of the many T450 or T460s units floating around my local pawn shops for just a bit more? Or maybe risk a used X1C? I was also considering the W530 since you can put a W520 keyboard and Core i7-3x in it (for those not in the know, it's about as powerful as a kaby lake i7, maybe a bit more) in the future.

I should mention that however I spend my money, I want to get
Something resembling classic ThinkPad durability
1080p panel or upgrade option, 1366 IPS at very least (which is what my X220 has now)
No less than 256GB storage
At least 9 hours battery life

Sorry for the blog post anons. Any insight?

just put the last ubuntu lts on it
but if it's for work, perhaps you'll need compatibility with the people you work with?

Yeah, I was thinking ubuntu, as well... just wanted to know in advance if there were any known issues.
Compatibility is not an issue... people run whatever they want here, the only requirement is that company data be kept on encrypted filesystems.

>Compatibility is not an issue... people run whatever they want here
sound cool, in what do you work?
btw my only issue with the latest uuntu lts is that it use GNOME as a default DE, but that's not realy an issue

>sound cool, in what do you work?
Software developer, SF-based startup.
>use GNOME as a default DE
That can be easily swapped out. I don't think GNOME is that bad, tho.

Can you give me a quick rundown on T530 vs W530? I'd like a medium size that will last me years with the maximum amount of upgrades available.

W over T:
>Better GPU
>2 more ram slots on quad-core models
>Color calibration sensor on some models

Just bought a t410 as a desktop email, essay writting machine, it came with only 2gig but i can only find 1x1 gig stick under the bottom flap, huh??

Is it better to pick up a t420 and roll with it or a t430 and upgrade the keyboard for the long term?

it says unbranded/generic

nother one under the keyboard
upgrade that shit btw

Attached: 1527690822690-g.jpg (474x530, 44K)

Does the i7 x230 really have worse battery life than the i5? I don't get it.

the t430 with the keyboard mod is a better choice in the long term.

X230? Got one this week just as clean as yours, even the touchpad is spotless. Sadly I spotted some slight artifacting a couple of times yesterday, going to test run Windows to check if it was the Linux driver acting up, or if the board is fubar.

Also, wipe it with a damp cloth w/ warm water, that's what I did.

Or just say fuck it and get a X220

Not sure if I want it to be a server or just put windows on it for school

I wonder who the original owner of my thinkpad was. Maybe it could even be a CIA nigger.

Just bought my first Thinkpad off of Ebay, is there anything I should look for once it gets here?

Attached: 1526444511415.jpg (600x423, 28K)

tfw bought a IBM 760XL and found cp from the previous owner

I would advise you to do some light uprades on the x220 and build a second machine into beastmode. You can get a 120gb msata ssd+( cell battery + 1tb hdd for cheap and that would already get you a very handy nachine. Then you can save the rest for a proper maximization on a T450

Front: X201 (2011) X61s (2008) X32 (2004) 560E (1998) 560E (1997) 701C (1994)
back: 560 (1996) W500 (2010) T500 (2010) R51 (2006) 340 (1993)
not in the pic: 760XL, 310E, T440p and a 240 that its on its way to me

i bought an x230 for about 100€, it has a shitty battery with 43% capacity (it lasts barely 1,5h). is it possible to check its recharge cycles? i saw some used batteries and I could test them personally but I need a reliable program/anything else to check them

Linux or Windows?
Linux: install tlp and do sudo tlp stat
Windows: use the vantage software

clean that bitch with sanitarized (i don,t know how to spell it) alcohol

tlp says (not supported)

install thinkpad-acpi-dkms

installed with this command
sudo apt-get install tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-dkms
still not supported

is it some kind of chink battery?, all Lenovo ones support cycle count

also try a reboot

it says lenovo, doesn't seem fake
rn i'm installing lenovo vantage in windows

Any recommendations for a pretty thin and lightweight 15" laptop for mostly office work and maybe the occasional game from a decade ago?
I travel a lot with my new job and don't really want to lug around my old T60 anymore.

Was looking at the Dell XPS series but I haven't really kept up to date on laptops since I got out of school so no idea who makes solid products anymore.

>T60 (check lcd)
What did he mean by this?

Attached: reallymakesyouthink.png (5000x5000, 412K)

T60 can have screens ranging from 1024x768 in shit tier TN to 1600x1200 god tier IPS

I bought a 14' T60 thinking it was upgradeable to IPS but nah, IPS was only offered on the 15' model.

Thanks tpg, now I'm gonna have to sell it and find a 15' on ebay.

thank you very much user
apparently all I had to do was specify the spispeed

WD 40 but don't overuse it on plastics it dryes up the plasticizer.

it's literally a line in a config file
jesus christ use ubuntu or something if you can't into linux

Looks like it was a driver issue after all, still stress testing on Windows as I type, no artifacts at all even fully loading both cpu and gpu.
Excuse the potato photo, night pics are a bitch, but it is a lot cleaner than I expected, clitmouse buttons are only slightly faded and there's zero wear on the touchpad, whoever owned it before knew what he had.
Also, is 71% battery health pretty average or pretty good for a X230 in 2018?

Attached: IMG_20180530_223636_802.jpg (3264x2448, 2.94M)

I WANT TO TAKE THE SHITTY WINDOWS STICKER OFF THE PALM REST OF MY MEMEPAD BUT I DONT WANT THE RESIDUE THERE FUCK

Why is the lenovo carbon x1 better than the xps 13?
>same gpu
>same cpu
>slightly faster ram
>same ssd size
>$200 more
>xps processes data faster
Why would I get the lenovo?

for fucks sake mate, use Google a bit and stop posting 3d
there's a screw you need to remove at the bottom and you can pop the keyboard out

Not that guy, but no, you literally take the keyboard out with your bare hands
But be careful, because there is a ribbon attached to the bottom of the keyboard

This guy uses a screwdriver but I have done it with my hands: youtube.com/watch?v=etf3oVdqHm0

use brake cleaner with gasoline, works 100% fine

Because it has significantly better battery life and you can throw it out the window without having to worry about it getting so much as a scratch.

Out of the window is probably pushing it, but it can take drop off a table. Testing courtesy to my obese co-worker gut slamming it across the desk.

Follow up to my Post about w520 temps.

turns out the MX-4 thermal goop had been sitting on a shelf in some hot warehouse for the last year or so. It had started to separate. Oil from it was running off the dies leaving air voids.

Put in cheap computer store paste
>gpu now only 58C overclocked running Unigine Valley in Loop.
>CPU runs full load in the high 60's non turbo, high 80's turbo.

What computer for sound synthesis and analysis in supercollider? pls respond

what kind of processing power is needed?

It can run pretty heavily once doing realtime analysis of input or with larger projects.

All these thinkpads, and not one is a T430 or X230

bump!

Attached: 002761_01.jpg (1136x852, 115K)

the ivy bridge elitebooks fill that niche, and I dislike the mostly plastic rollcage and lid of the newer thinkpads.
The T400 is the apex of the nupads.

it worked on windows 158 cycles since 2014

Guys my "intel core i7" sticker is starting to slide off and nearly fall off. What kind of glue do they use to attach the laminate sticker to plastic?

Any reason not to go for X220/X230 tablets?

Hinge will fucking die

> T430s, my daily use machine

> T410s with a hard drive in desperate need of replacing, installed linux on it but I never need it bc cygwin is a thing
> X200s, pretty slow compared to the other ones, keep it around because it's small and comfy

Not a thinkpad, not even a business laptop, but I also have a Y700-14ISK. It doesn't leave my apartment (the T430s is just a bit larger, but it's lighter and the battery life is better) but I use it for CAD, watching movies, larger programming projects, games, and basically anything where a discrete GPU and nice display are relevant.

Used to have:
> some random HP 14" that looks a lot like a T400, but it had a big battery on the bottom that angled it upwards in the back
> 2 identical X200's, donated to a high school robotics program
> a different T410s, also donated to a high school robotics program

Only real issue is there are no official 9 cell batteries for them. Only generic chink.

You get guaranteed IPS screens with them which is nice.

Jesus christ
I thought I was advanced when I had 2 X1's and a handful of X200's and T4x0's

There's a utility built into powershell that will check battery vitals on windows. I've used it a couple times and it's pretty informative desu

I fixed + resold 2 X1 Carbons a while ago. They might not look the part, but they're braindead easy to service. They also didn't have any bloatware to speak of, the cooling seemed robust, and the battery life was ridiculous. Would recommend.

Use nail polish remover, but don't slather that shit on the laptop or anything because it can eat away at the plastic if you use too much

The mouse keys on the keyboard and trackpoint don't work at all

I fell for the thinkpad meme and got myself an x201 for $90 USD. Took it apart and got it mostly cleaned up, swapped out the 4 gb of ram for 16 I had lying around. So far it’s great to use, I really like the touchpoint and the desktot style keyboard. One thing that kinda pissed me of was on the ebay posting the seller said the battery was in “””good””” condition but when I looked at the battery manager software it says that its only holding about 20% of its original charge. Could I safely buy a non OEM battery without it frying my computer or are the prices too good to be true? Also I’m having an issue with the CPU getting upwards of 80 degrees for seemingly no reason, this has only happened consistently when its charging and I’m watching videos.

id get Think pad Fan Control and force a more aggressive fan profile when its plugged in.

I personally have been un-impressed with the standard thermal solution and fan curves the thinkpad line has had since lenovo acquired it. They seem to lean to quieter operation even at the expense of performance.
