Clojure and Scala are universally praised as great languages. Doesn't mean Java is bad (it has some good parts).

Why shouldn't it be? It's easier to write than C and C++, enforces better structure than scripting languages making in more appealing in business plus what JVM provides: massive standard library, you write once and runs on every system, good interoperability.
