RAM and GPU's are what's expensive
Hard drives are cheap as fuck

>RAM and GPU's are what's expensive

>not buying ddr4 when it tanked in price after launch
you deserve what you get

burstcoin

But they arent.

da vergen narunigger

storage is cheap, especially hard drives. guess it sucks being a poorfag

shit is like $50/tb if you account for the fact that every each tb require corresponding tb of backup

That is a major expense if you're an autistic data hoarder

bullshit, buy larger drives; they price turns around $30/tb.

Why do people even hoard data this hard. I literally only have music and personal photos and videos. Films and TV are pointless to keep. Just stream it or watch fotm. If you're hoarding porn or anime then you have major issues.

But they are not?

You can get a new 10TB drive for around $320-350.

>major issues
yeah they know

Because there is no guarantee that the sites that deliver you content will always stay up. People have been fucked over before, and it will keep happening. Youtube for instance is very prone to taking down videos.

If someone has enough disposable income give enough shit to back things up, then that's their choice. Stating that they have 'major issues' is beyond retarded. You might be a common pleb who does typical normie shit with data, but not everyone is like you.

They aren't?

(You)

> Just stream it
Dealing with random streaming services [and doing it again on revisits] to save $30 for a TB of storage? Shit taste.

OP probably pirates a lot and collects child porn. Did you know a fellow basement dweller recently was arrested with 68 TB of child porn. Just imagine that and now realize that the average Jow Forums poster probably is the same with anime/useless games/movies/etc

Including backup?

FYI I'm also Canadian and speaking in Canadian dollars

That's fucking expensive

Are you people even autistic?

>That's fucking expensive
Maybe not the cheapest offer possible, but absolutely not "fucking expensive". Are you living in Congo?

Canada

please send canned goods.

>That's fucking expensive

t. NEET or min wage cuck

It's nearly 1000$ to expand your effective storage by a mere 10 tb

How the fuck is that not expensive?

Everything is expensive in Canada.

> Canada
Please.

That place isn't so destitute that you wouldn't see random kids with more expensive smartphones [not even considering that they probably have $600/year phone service contracts or some shit like that].

And you're not running around trying to get a look at every new-ish car either, right?

Yeah telecom services are insanely expensive here

Also you underestimate how much the standard of living here has decreased over the last decade for the average person

Basically this

>It's nearly 1000$ to expand your effective storage by a mere 10 tb

Even if you are autistic enough to backup every single bit of space you use it's not $1000. It costs $250-300 to expand your effective real hard drive space by 10TB. You don't need to backup every single porn/anime you download you retarded mutt.

Please send me an example of a hard drive with 10tb of storage for ~150$CAD

You will not find one

>It's nearly 1000$ to expand your effective storage by a mere 10tb
It's $350 / 10TB and then maybe a $20-30 share on the computer you build.

Everything else is a matter of what RAID / replication levels you use and how many copies you keep.

>using RAID

>~150$CAD
What the fuck are you on about? user quoted $250-300.

>effective storage

Yes? RAID5/6 on Linux is a great idea. Easy to set up, very well-tested, good performance, low hardware requirements.

WD Easystore or MyBooks
on sale frequently for $170
That's an 8TB Red or White-label Red for 21.25 dollars per TB
reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/7fx0i0/wd_easystore_8tb_compendium

I can get 8tb drives for $150.

i got 2tb for $50. did i do good

Those are prices in American dollars in the United States.

Maybe stop having such a shitty country then, or petition for your country to enter the United States. Face it, fuckhole. You're already America 2.0. What's the harm in making it official?

>effective storage
Yes, a modern 10TB HDD with 10TB of storage effective.

What fucking thing are you doing that it's not effectively 10TB? FAT16?

Sure, that's okay.

Why RAID when you can ZFS?

Attached: vEJVUlK.jpg (1000x750, 193K)

Linux mdadm RAID has much lower hardware requirements and more stable IO performance (both, essentially).

Because btrfs in raid1 is less taxing and more reliable then a zfs system.

btrfs raid5 or 6 requires a uninterruptible power supply do avoid corruption. Btrfs raid0,1,10 work perfectly fine and isn't as memory intensive as zfs.

Nobody uses HDDs without redundancy these days. If you want 10TB of effective storage, you need two 10TB HDDs in RAID1. Having a single drive backing your volume is more like volatile memory than storage.

Ignore the peasants. They are the type that don't believe gradual bitrot is a thing.

> Nobody uses HDDs without redundancy these days
Wrong.

> you need two 10TB HDDs in RAID1
Depends on what kind of redundancy you need on each type of data you store.

Feel free to do a k+m erasure coded pool or n-times replication or RAID5 or whatever else, as-needed.

You could buy 4x4TB drives (16TB total rather than 20), put them in RAID5 and get 12TB usable storage rather than 10TB while still being able to absorb a one drive failure without data loss.

In my case I'm more worried about hazards like house fires, leaks/flooding, burglary etc...

Which is why I keep backup drives in a different location entirely than my main array

Imagine wasting this much money on anime and porn that you watch a few times a year if that after seeing it the first time.

This is honestly one of the dumbest threads I've ever seen on Jow Forums. A good thread was killed for this piece of shit.

that's less than a half of my weekly wage. how about you get a fucking job?

>petition for your country to enter the United States.

can you do that? just attach an entire country to the US as a new state?

you archive them because you know they won't be online forever.

>buying something you don't need yet just because it's cheap

>A good thread was killed for this piece of shit.
That's wishful thinking and you know it.

>what are living expenses
>what is saving for retirement
>what is insurance

and that such a waste how?

Wasn't it the case with Texas?

How about you leave mommy's house?
