what's the point of powered monitors/speakers

What headphones and amp is he using?

Don't you mean: What am **I** using?

>Low-frequency augmentation is often accomplished through the addition of a supplementary bass bandpass section, or subwoofer.
Leave it to the engineering book to use simple English.
A classic tidbit:
>In the 1980s one Japanese compact design, the Yamaha NS-10 200 mm two-way hi-fi speaker, did become the next de-facto reference standard for console-top ‘nearfield’ monitoring. Its success began when it was adopted by major recording engineers searching for the smallest speaker that would still yield a minimally acceptable bandwidth. In this way its success can be seen as the next step in compact monitor evolution, combining the functionality of the JBL 4311 and the Auratone. After sustained industry demand, Yamaha responded with a dedicated pro version, the NS-10M, an interesting reversal of the JBL 4311 to L100, Pro to hi-fi transformation. While widely applied and ubiquitous as a reference in large commercial and home project studios alike, a general agreement as to its harsh and forward high-frequency character led to the practice of adding a layer of tissue in front of the tweeter to attenuate the response in that range.

Compromised sound quality is the result.

Avoid cheap shit. Good powered monitors have separate amplifiers post-crossover which has distinct advantages and they also DSP the amps specifically for the drivers. Those are generally above the budget of what people can afford on Jow Forums though. There are some great deals to be had with passive speakers.

I like that chair way more than the guy's audio setup.

what do you think about at 2035? i'm planning to grab it for home recording

I was gonna start making Miso and call it ;
'Miso Horney' would you buy it?

Not sure what that is

Hey guys. I'm thinking about getting a good friend some decent quality earbuds for lifting and general fitness stuff where headphones would be awkward. Any suggestions under 100 would be appreciated.

well, does it work

Its a good entry level true LDC, and if you're asking about an entry level studio mic it's fine for your purpose. At that level its not the gear that is the limiting factor. I would start out by putting more effort into getting a good room treatment and learning to mix than blowing your money on high end stuff.

It's Audiotechnica's entry level 20 series cardioid 1" studio condenser

Come here, QT.

Yeah just fine. Remote too. It was refurbished in 2009 apparently. It was also on sale and $8.99 was all I paid.

250 new on Amazon. Should be found used/open box/refurb for less.

I may be the person who suggested them to you initially.
What is the space you are placing them like?

What's the advantage of this one over what Dayton uses?

>My brother married a woman 10 years younger than him
Speaking as a 29 year old male dating a 19 year old woman, it has its ups and downs.

inmature?

To a degree, I would say more that emotional development takes time to get through in my experience, which is a factor to immaturity but not the sole cause of it. I think I got pretty lucky in that regard.

I would think that age gap might make things pretty difficult. I mean I'm just thinking about things I was thinking about at 19 versus what I think about now (around your age). I mean last night I paid my homeowners insurance premium, called the landscaper, did some investment stuff, made some afterhours work calls. When I was 20 my brain was just in a different place. I was in college, bit unsure of where I was going to go after, couldn't even legally drink.

I mean the appeal of 19 year old pussy is all to real, but, relationship I donno. Have to be an extremely mature girl.

>I would think that age gap might make things pretty difficult.
I mean it depends on how much you have in common with each other, just like any other relationship between people.

>I mean the appeal of 19 year old pussy is all to real, but, relationship I donno. Have to be an extremely mature girl.
Thats true, which is hard really at any age now given how coddled most people are. I just feel that I lucked out by finding someone whom takes their life seriously and doesnt live on their phone/social media.

You realize, I hope, that some studio monitors are desired for qualities that would be unpleasant to listen to, but which have utility in revealing certain aspects of a recording in a way that may not be natural. The Yamaha NS10 is prime example.

You should avoid giving headphones to a kid that young -- it is unnatural and may damage hearing.

at 19, most girls are socially compatible with guys of 24; 29 isn't a significant difference either

what kinda speakers do you have?

some girls just like older guys
my wife's uncle was 35 when he met his wife, who was 20; she was very aggressive in going after him -- he wasn't rich or anything, just someone she wanted; they've been married >30 years

>some girls just like older guys
Isnt that the truth, she was pursuing me way more than I was her when we first met, the age gap was pretty strange to me but now I am fine with it.

When you guys are done talking about your awesome lives with young qts can you help a robot out?

I have a 5.1 setup and want to start looking at upgrading to the latest video tech on a receiver and get a 4k tv. My front 3 speakers are 4-ohm, rear speakers are 8-ohm. Do I get a receiver and then get a 3 channel amp for the front three speakers? What's a good receiver? Should I look at getting into 7.1 or Atmos or any of that stuff?

Attached: 1527724970246 (1).png (789x750, 18K)

brand of speakers?
size of room?

i dont there's any bad receivers except kenwood, insignia, etc; most are good -- e.g., any sony is a solid performer, as is pioneer

if you're looking at more unique brands, expect to pay much more new or used

M&K S-150 oldies
Room is about 1200sq.ft. and it's pretty shit acoustically because of the layout.
I have an old M&K K-10 subwoofer but probably will buy a new one at some point since that wasn't designed to keep up with the S-150s.

I was looking at Denon for a receiver and Emotiva for a 3 channel amp? Wasn't sure what Denon is the best to get though. I'm kind of mixed if I want to attempt to go to Atmos or just stay 5.1.

For a TV I was kind of looking at those TLC tv's. Can get a 65" with Dolby Vision and everything for 800 bucks.

Yeah but there are many studio monitors (the Adams are an example) which are pleasant to listen to while others are more fatiguing (such as the Yamaha has)

some places will let you home demo
denon models in the same tier will be similar in terms of most current generation and prior generations

if you buy used, you can save yourself $$$

the denon and emotiva brands are solid choices and your speakers are good, so its gonna come down to personal preference when you audition

other "standard" brands that aren't over the top expensive are here:
crutchfield.com/g_10420/Home-Theater-Receivers.html

i personally have good experience with cambridge audio, pioneer and sony, but all the brands shown there are solid

here's an older review, but it highlights some differences between brands in terms of sonic features

How important is it to get a good turntable? What do you guys use?
Right now I'm between an AT LP120, U-turn Orbit, and a Fluance RT81. Any recommendations?

Because those suck

Thanks. I was looking on accessories4less.com for some b-stock stuff that still has warranty.

What do you think of 5.1 versus 7.1 versus Atmos?

>U-turn Orbit
never understood why people get these meme things. direct drive > belt drive, objectively.

not sure on 7.1 since ive never tried it
ive run 6.1 and that was plenty for me - sort of overkill - many kinds of media don't go above actual 5.1
ive eventually scaled back to 2.1 for most things

i have a receiver that does atmos and i usually disable it because it seems to color the sound or maybe im doing something wrong -- its too many components running at once and it gives me a headache -- so i wind up back at 2.1, and then the subwoofer starts to bug me so i cut it back to 2.0 with pass-through

its nice to have though for the odd movie that deserves to played really loud

but thats just my opinion man

I'll start with 5.1 and then see. I imagine it will depend on my room too.

I was looking at this receiver: accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrx4400h/denon-avr-x4400h-9.2-ch-x-125-watts-networking-a/v-receiver-w/heos/1.html

Cool, is that your project? Hey if I run an auto-eq microphone on my receiver do I need a boom stand or can I use a camera tripod? How much does the body need to be out of the way?

Those look really neat.

>meme chair
What kind of speakers are those?

the joke is that you have a good setup but have a shit view in spite of it

can somebody recommend me some good speakers that support RCA? I'm willing to spend up to $400, they'll be accompanying this big guy

Attached: image1 (1).jpg (3024x3024, 1.89M)

Doesn't direct drive have a higher noise floor though? The main advantage of direct drive would just be speed consistency correct?

oh i'm a brainlet.

Why not get a cheap receiver? Cheap + powered speakers is a bad combo. You can get more value with a cheap receiver and then finding some nice used speakers or even buying some new ones that are reasonably priced. On top of that you can plug other sources into a receiver so more useful.

That CD player reminds me of my childhood. My dad had three of those in a rack. When we moved he had me take all the CD's out one by one and then but them back in.

Attached: 1498496656057.png (657x527, 25K)

I'm really caught in the middle because I'm a pathetic wageslave paying rent while also trying to build both a CD collection and a system for it at the same time. It's all a work-in-progress. I could get a receiver, which would allow me to get both cube-sized powered speakers to go beside it, alongside standing ones to go on each side. Or I could just get a pair of powered Klipsch's. It's all so tempting, but then I think of my other expenses and get extremely discouraged to go for the more costly options

Klipsch also has a $800 bundle of two powered speakers with a turntable, which I've been considering putting on one side and the CD changer on the other. Really clueless about my options if that wasn't obvious enough

>if I run an auto-eq microphone on my receiver do I need a boom stand or can I use a camera tripod?
tripod should be fine, just don't walk about when measuring.

>How much does the body need to be out of the way?
! metre from the acoustic axis

I've put more thought into it and you're right, I should go with the receiver. A pair of Sony floorstanding speakers and a Sherwood receiver won't cost me more than $420 - just about what I would pay for some powered Klipsch's. Pretty new to this but getting the hang of it

>denon-avr-x4400h

I need a dedicated phono stage/preamp.

Whats the best for under 130?

If you can solder, the Bugle 2 is great for the money.
hagerman-audio-labs.myshopify.com/collections/phono-preamps

Enjoy. It's a comfy hobby.

Yeah I was thinking about expanding to Atmos, that's why. Also not sure if 7.1 receivers have all the latest video processing and such. I need to do more research for sure.

Any non kits?

I'd be more interested in a separate device to do channel routing. It'd be easier to switch out when the next latest and greatest format comes out.

You mean a pre-processor? That's what I thought at first too, but the more research I've done I found a lot of times the pre-processors cost the same or more as receivers, and the decent receivers have pre-outs anyways. Like here is the pre-pro I was looking at (now out of stock), and this is factory refurbished price: accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/marav7703/marantz-av7703-11.2-ch-networking-a/v-preamp/processor-w/heos/1.html
