Transmission-remote-cli+transmission-daemon is an excellent torrent client/server system.
w3m/elinks/links2/lynx are comfy browsers for text reader mode.
Icecat is the only truly non-pozzed graphical browser.
irssi is a small and functional irc client.
cowsay a cute. CUTE!
ncftp is a far superior ftp client than the default. Very simple to work with.
vsftpd is a great ftp/sftp server.
tiling window managers are the patrician way to manage windows.
NFS is a solid way to share data over your local network. Can be made secure with Kerberos integration.
mutt is a cool email client
samba provides compatibility with Microsoft's legacy SMB protocol.
OpenZFS/ZFSonLinux is an excellent filesystem for storage servers.
btrfs as well, as long as you don't need parity raid.
nvi/vim are excellent text editors
ed is good for small edits and memes
emacs is a solid lisp machine implementation
tar+xz is a great way to archive stuff.
GNOME/KDE are comfy for normies.
