Is it worth it to have a pi set up at all times for OpenVPN or should I just use my desktop?

depending on what version- NES/SMS 240p via composite gaming.
Probably SNES/Genesis too on Raspi2/3 - not on 1 though (or zero but no composite video output on zero)

I use mine to play retro games. It works pretty well. Runs SNES and Genesis games flawlessly and most PS1 games pretty well (some like Tony Hawk have horrible input lag)

It's just a composite video cable - no fancy RGB here (raspi can't do analog RGB without expensive hats/adapters anyway, at which point there are better things to buy)

TV's have better contrast.
Most decent TV's have 5500:1 static contrast - that's without fancy FALD or expensive OLED.
I don't plug an antenna or ethernet cable into them though...

for a project i hooked my pi up with a temperature+humidity sensor, wrote a pythonscript that saves the readings into a sql database every ~10 minutes which then gets displayed on a webserver for me to look at it. kinda neat but also kinda useless. but was fun nonetheless
