My computer keeps freezing and requires a restart, it just gets stuck, it does not shut down and it will not unfreeze even after hours, Is it reasonable to think that the overheating, or apparent overheating, is causing this?

I really need help

Realistically how can I type characters not in English without alt codes or a different keyboard layout? All I really want to do is map my num pad keys to umlauts/å/ß but for some reason this is rather difficult

is there a way to add black frame insertion on mpv?

am I blind? where do you get 86° from?
71° is manageable. if it gets >90° then there is reason for concern

Doing some cleaning I found my old phone and surprised it works

What can I do with it?

Works:
-HDMI output
-audio output
-fingerprint sensor
-camera
HSDPA modem

Cons:
-hdmi only works up to Android 2.3.6
-no longer updated OS
-WiFi is fucked in hardware

It says 86 in overwatch. while playing overwatch cpuid often says 86 while overwatch says 90

can or would that overheating be the cuase of freezing and requiring a manual reset?

just in case that idiot who made a thread asking how to use cd drops by this thread: I told you so

>while playing overwatch cpuid often says 86 while overwatch says 90
during playing it should be higher, yes. but I'd rather trust cpuid than the game as for the real temps

>can or would that overheating be the cuase of freezing and requiring a manual reset?
Could be, modern hardware has halt/reset mechanisms in place to avoid hardware damage.
I'm not sure if 90° is high enough for such a mechanic to kick in, I'd say potentially no.
Try to boot into bios and check if any temp limits are set and/or consult your mainboard manufacturers manual.

Can someone help my retarded ass out? I have a brand new 550w G3 PSU that I want to use for my new build. PCpartpicker says its fine, but I want a second option.

Thanks brehs, sorry im stupid.

I have some questions about using HDDs as backups. I bought 2 used 3TB WD HDDs that I want to use for redundant backups. I've never done this in the past, so I don't know much about the pros and cons of the many ways I could do this. my questions are:
- is there a fast, automatic way (by firmware?) to make western-digital HDDs recognize and "repair" the bad sectors?
- what's better, hardware or software RAID 1?
- what about backup redundancy by using 2 network-connected devices instead of RAID 1? (I have 2 identical Intel NUCs, could replace the 3.5" HDDs for 2.5" ones). using small HDDs in the NUCs would save me lots of electricity, as opposed to having 3.5" HDDs in my main computer, running 24/7...
- what's better, manual (as in, copy the files manually) or automatic (have scripts and shit to do it every day/week) backups?
- what if I want to shutdown the disks from time to time to save on electricity?

Can I upgrade an AMD FX CPU to a Ryzen with the same MB?

looks fine to me. Just a quick suggestion though; don't buy windows 10. You can easily just download the official iso from the ms website and use mstoolkit to activate it.

install vnc server on it, connect to monitor/TV to use it as smart TV or as another PC.
you could even run linux on that thing...
also, configure remote adb and run random stuff from other computers

no
You can use pcpartpicker.com to test out compatibility between parts.

ah, shit, missed the
>-WiFi is fucked in hardware
part. anyway, USB tethering is a thing, though you'd need another computer, which would make my idea almost redundant... almost. you could connect it to a router that runs openwrt, or have a long USB cable to attach it to your laptop or some shit

I appreciate your suggestion, I will google and try to figure out how to use the toolkit to get it activated. I'm finally upgrading from an old amd hexcore+7770 2gb card, so I'm hoping this build will blow my mind.

Thanks.

...

No problem user. Looks like a fun build and I'm sure it will be an awesome upgrade for you!
As for the toolkit, it's really quite simple. You can use the resources on this page as they are all verified to be clean: reddit.com/r/Piracy/wiki/tools
Basically you would download an iso of windows and install it normally. When it asks you to enter your product key there will be a button in the corner that says "enter key later" or something similar. Hit that and continue with the installation.
After all that just download the mstoolkit (linked above) and run the E-Z activator thing and it should only take a minute or two before telling you windows has been successfully activated.

If you're still confused you can just look up mstoolkit activation; there is no shortage of guides.

>- is there a fast, automatic way (by firmware?) to make western-digital HDDs recognize and "repair" the bad sectors?
its the OS'es job to detect bad sectors, no firmware
>- what's better, hardware or software RAID 1?
depends on the controller. proper software raid is better than a cheap chink raid controller
>- what about backup redundancy by using 2 network-connected devices instead of RAID 1? (I have 2 identical Intel NUCs, could replace the 3.5" HDDs for 2.5" ones). using small HDDs in the NUCs would save me lots of electricity, as opposed to having 3.5" HDDs in my main computer, running 24/7...
depends on your backup strategy. if you have a good script running, 2 individual backups work too if you have a decent fail detection and recovery plan setup
>- what's better, manual (as in, copy the files manually) or automatic (have scripts and shit to do it every day/week) backups?
automatic

Install Gentoo.

Thanks man, I'm looking forward to it. I'll save that $100 and put it towards a VR system in the future. I've tried VR and I'm really interested in some of the cool features on google earth. That was actually the inspiration for me to save for the build.

I assume that there isn't risk of a botnet since I'm downloading the official iso from microsoft right? I remember back in 2009 I read some info that suggested iso's off TPB were part of botnets.

yeah there's no botnet other than windows 10 itself. If you want to download an ltsb iso it's a bit harder, but there are some places that have (supposedly) clean isos for that, which is what I use.
In case you are interested and aren't sure what ltsb is, it's windows 10 with ONLY security updates. Currently there is win10 ltsb 2015 and 2016 with the next one slated for release in 2019. So if you do decide to go with ltsb, you won't get any of the new "features" added in after july 2016 until the 2019 build is released.
Oh yeah, it also has no tiles in the start menu, no cortana, no ms store, lower telemetry level, and no forced automatic updates.

Already have 4 gentoo devices, was hoping for something different on this one.

Should I be concerned on buying a Win10 Pro key on amazon reseller if I could return it if turns out to be fake?
Any precautions should I take before taking the plunge?

htpc?

Should I update my music player from Winamp on my Windows boot? If so, what to?

is there something that you want your music player to be able to do that winamp can't? If that's not the case there's no reason to change it.

It does not appear to be descending in any significant way, so no.

I do note that there isn't any subpixel rendering, but that isn't going to matter at high DPI, I'm just irritated that this is going by the wayside when so many machines are still out there that don't have high DPI. Apart from that it looks alright.

I'm enjoying Manjaro. It's basically babby's first Arch. Your mileage may vary but if you're looking to try something a bit different and already have 4 Gentoo devices you have nothing to lose.

Remove any AMD driver Windows Update has fed you and install the AMD GPU driver yourself from the AMD site?

Mostly it's just a pain in the ass to try and cobble together a playlist. My habit of acquiring discographies has landed me with almost 14,000 songs and at least half of those are trash.

>WiFi is fucked
dump it

Still has "yuri" in the title.

Install Snow Leopard. It was the last really good OS X, and it runs beautifully on C2D.

why are you buying it? If it's just for home use then stick to mstoolkit and save your money. If it's for some kind of official purpose then only buy the key from microsoft or some other certified reseller.

Check reviews on the seller and the product listing. Don't pay too much, compare prices to reddit Jow Forumsmicrosoftsoftwareexchange or whatever it was. Check how the refund policy works.

Sell it and use that money as a down payment on a car

What are you looking for out of a music player app? I use foobar2000 myself, in the simplest layout, where it's just a list of songs in the playlist and I can drag files in from Explorer to add them and save as *.m3u. I make sure the titles are in the filenames and then just use the search box in Explorer to search my library.

I'm in a coding bootcamp right now (yeah, yeah, I know) and really don't understand Javascript at all.
Do you guys have any recommendations on courses to take online to understand it better?

>>- is there a fast, automatic way (by firmware?) to make western-digital HDDs recognize and "repair" the bad sectors?
>its the OS'es job to detect bad sectors, no firmware
really? I thought it was the drive. could you give me something to read about how this is done?

>>- what's better, hardware or software RAID 1?
>depends on the controller. proper software raid is better than a cheap chink raid controller
it's an AM4 mobo (MSI B350M Mortar), I have no idea if this is of good or bad quality.
btw, how do hardware RAID setups appear to the OS? as a single HDD?

>>- what about backup redundancy by using 2 network-connected devices instead of RAID 1? (I have 2 identical Intel NUCs, could replace the 3.5" HDDs for 2.5" ones). using small HDDs in the NUCs would save me lots of electricity, as opposed to having 3.5" HDDs in my main computer, running 24/7...
>depends on your backup strategy. if you have a good script running, 2 individual backups work too if you have a decent fail detection and recovery plan setup
now that I think about it, this seems to be kinda complicated if done "manually"...
is there software that does detection/correction/recovery automatically? what software/linux distros can manage a setup like this (distributed storage in a network) for making backups?

>>- what's better, manual (as in, copy the files manually) or automatic (have scripts and shit to do it every day/week) backups?
>automatic
well, the risk of doing this would be to make a mistake at the wrong time, wouldn't it?

>>- what if I want to shutdown the disks from time to time to save on electricity?
>linux: hdparm
I mean, I know how to shutdown HDDs, but I want to know how RAID managers and network backup servers manage this

give it back tyrese

>compare prices to reddit Jow Forumsmicrosoftsoftwareexchange or whatever it was.
oh yeah, that place exists.
any cons on getting the W8.1pro key instead of win10pro?
does W8.1pro keys still get updated to win10 pro?

>any cons on getting the W8.1pro key instead of win10pro?
idk if you would consider getting 8.1 instead of 10 a pro or a con. It has most of the good things 10 brings, and not so many of the bad parts.

>does W8.1pro keys still get updated to win10 pro?
No.

I cracked my screen and everything still works. Is this all I need for a replacement?

That looks legit.

so any reason opera doesnt like to work with image hover on this site? chrome has no issues, but opera wont load webms. if i disable and re enable image hover its fine, until reload the page. I havent found any kind of permanent fix for this other than finally switching to chrome, a long overdue browser swap. Before i do tho, any idea why this is happening?

Yup. I went to AMD's website and downloaded the proper driver. It didn't work.

I've tried DDu, reinstalling windows, fully updating windows, older drivers. Nothing worked. I did this for about 10 hours before giving up.

Everything installed and works fine on Linux btw.

I have never really heard of this but I'll give it a shot... Is there a way to rice out a linux terminal without a desktop manager? Things like putting a background image on the terminal and such? Or even change colors of the background?

What's a 4TB external hard drive that isn't too expensive but still is reliable enough to be worth using?

I just need it to hold my collections of music, movies, games, etc. so it won't get used a whole lot after the initial transfer of all my stuff.

Trying to pick ahead of time which brand or model of drive will be more or less reliable is like trying to pick lottery numbers. It's useless. Any drive can die at any time, make backups. If you don't, well, just get the cheapest thing and hope you're lucky, it only becomes apparent which models of drive are worse than normal well after the fact.

>trying to get my porn collection off my phone, since i have a habit of saving everything and i now only have 1GB left of free memory

Get a life

Can't just put them on a microsd card, pop it out, and read it?

upload to google drive/dropbox/onedrive/box/literally any of the 5000 internet upload services

Just transplanted my guts to a new case and now my machine won't boot. It powers on for about 10-15 seconds, then powers off for several seconds before powering back on by itself and repeating again. No beeps, no display. Pulled the HDD and video card, no change. What do?

OnePlus 3, no SD slot.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
>google drive
>porn
They take that shit down, user.

In C++, when would I use _var as a name according to coding conventions?

Try moving the files to your computer in smaller blocks - say a thousand at a time. This will be tedious but if windows is choking on being asked to copy a gorillion small files (this is not uncommon) then it should help.

Recently I saw someone post about a new activator that generates legit Windows 10 digital licenses/ hwids but I can't find it. Anyone know if this is real and where to find it?

How do I get an invite code from teknik?

Wanna repurpose my old phone as a surveillance device.
Whats a good program to make a phone send images/video over LAN? Extra points for motion detection.
Its an ancient version of android but im sure theres something.

Is the current firefox good? I'm still on a 56 or something version before the overhaul because they made it somehow slower in one update and I just said fuck it and reverted and turned off updates.

never

Really? I've seen others use it before. _var and __var. Is that bad convention?

IP Webcam is an OK app but I haven't used it in a while. It has a viewer IIRC but you can also potentially add it to NVR software as well if you are interested in that.

>bad convention
In c++ it is

Never mind. Reseating the ram fixed the power cycling and changing monitors fixed the no display issue. All is good now.

I currently have a dual boot arch and windows, and also a shared NTFS partition which I can use to access files from either OS.
I want to basically keep this set up, but have the partitions encrypted. Ive set up DM-crypt on arch before, but how will this work with dual boot and with the shared partition.
Any ideas? Im fine with having to reinstall everything

You're right, snow leopard is pretty comfy compared to the lion it had

is it a meme to get certification for a language?

Which one of these files is the driver?
I figured I'd just unzip it, get a single driver file, then figure out how to package it manually, then install it. But there's so many files and the instruction manual says to just pack the 'driver' without mentioning which one it is. Is the 'Driver' folder the driver? Is it the Zip file itself? Or is it one of the countless files within the 'Driver' folder? What's the extension called?

That being said, why aren't linux drivers packed conveniently as apt packages already like Windows exe files? Seems like a lot of hassle just to get something to run, and then on Linux you don't even get a nice interface for the device, you're stuck with the terminal commands if you want to make any adjustments or check the status of the device while Windows/Macs get their own pretty UI.

Attached: driver folder.jpg (442x954, 131K)

i use syncthing to keep porn in sync with my phone

non-proprietary linux drivers are made part of the linux kernel sources, so they ship with linux, you don't need to install each one
as for what you have, those are sources, you need to compile them into a .ko file

>why aren't linux drivers packed conveniently as apt packages already like Windows exe files?
for this, it doesn't make sense to ship pre-compiled kernel modules (drivers), as while userspace ABI is backwards compatible (you can run old applications on new kernels), kernelspace ABIs are not, so you need to compile modules against your specific kernel

What IRC channels should I be lurking in?

Did they remove the "saved reply" feature from Clover?

is there a single audio device (like a dac) which can support optical input from one device and usb audio/mic from another 2 devices so i can listen to all 3 devices on one pair of headphones and also use the a single mic on 2 of the devices without having to manually swap the mic between them? i will only be using the mic on a single device at a time anyway however i just want to make my setup easier to use.

Now I don't know if there's another place to post this but I want to shrink a storage volume in freenas to use with my esxi machine as a remote datastore. Is there any way to shrink a partition in freenas so I can use the space elsewhere? Removing one disk from the pool would be ideal. there's five drives in it.

Wangblows has my headset listed as speakers in its sound devices, which is totally fine. The thing that isn't totally fine is that it also identifies headphones, and then several times per second will drop and re-add the headphones into the device manager. This has been causing, from what I can tell, my sound to suddenly cut out and come back frequently and has in some circumstances lead to microfreezes in programs. The best part is that it never even attempts to pipe sound through these disabled and clearly not plugged in headphones, it just keeps detecting that it exists and then quickly removing it which fucks up the sound. The best part is that there is no device driver for this, and it keeps shitting the bed regardless of what I do.

Is there a way to fix this except for nuking this shitty OS?
