Are deepfakes dead? After everything was wiped out I don't hear about them anymore. Even a lot of the original people who were putting out non-porn fakes have gone dark. Was it just a fad that got snuffed out right as it was getting good or has it just gone so far underground it's invisible?
That's an example of what some people were doing. The dude was obsessed with Tommy Wiseau. There were a lot of cool things getting put out. I didn't have the GPU to do it so I'm just disappointed it's all quite.
AFAIK, takes too long and results are mostly innacurate. More advanced AI is required to solve both problem.

It was thriving on reddit with multiple subs dedicated to it. A lot of them strictly to tech discussions and no videos even being posted. So subreddits just talking about the tech were outright banned. Even porn hub was banning deepfakes people uploaded. People are going out of their way to scare monger and hype up the abuses it could cause instead of the potential.
Someone posted whats called a faceset of Emma Watson. It contained roughly 3000 images of 64x64 pixels of her face. One of the pictures were from when she was in the harry potter movies. People then went out of thier way saying that it was promoting child porn because a single face for training out of 3000 was when she was a child and tried to pursue it. Its what led to more articles sensationalizing the dangers.

The training images *are* 2D. The only problem is getting a large and diverse enough waifu image set for the model to abstract away the facial features and positions from the drawing.
Mapping a hand-drawn stylized face to a real one sounds like a good exercise in CNN-based modelling, actually. If your model can handle a stylized face then you're definitely using enough abstraction for mapping real ones together.

Collecting good training data takes way too long. The only way deepfakes could survive is with a central community fed repository of usable training data. That's the only way I see deepfakes taking off. Currently you could easily spend hours collecting training data, and days training the AI, just to have the result end up shit. I can put up with my computer running slow for a few days while it processes in the background, but I'm not going to dedicate hours of my time to a novelty.

Deepfakes will firmly solidify that we now live in a post truth society. What I mean is that we already have the fundamental underlying knowledge to create fakes of not only video, but voice, writing (hand and style of substance), and even behavior and habits. Fakes of this stuff can be currently made to a level where one would need training and analytical tools to pick apart an authentic vs fake media. The ramifications of such technology have not yet been realized, I can only dream how, but it will come to a point where one will have to make a descision to treat every interaction with media and (in the future), other people as fake until proven otherwise. The difference between genuine and fake information will shrink to the point where "truth" may mean nothing at all.
The power this technology affords to anyone who can reliably create such fakes is immense. Blackmail, propaganda, manipulation, and subversion are just the tip. This shit is terrifying and exciting. People are supposed to learn about people not being on any social media, but with enough time I could create bots to post shit exactly like any prolific poster on social media. The information to construct an accurate model of people's habits, behaviors, and likeness is all available when you use social media. Before I go off on a bigger tangent, clean your room bucko and get off social media and delete all available digital information of yourself.
