Snapchat uses the camera API on some phones. They would need to develop for dozens/hundreds of different devices if they did it differently.

So Snapchat devs are in other words too retarded to create a base-code which auto-detects the system on which it is installed and communicate with the userbase on some forum or something to co-develop plug-ins for each and every device so it can then be just reviewed by Snapchat and implemented within the base-code listing for detection and connection.
Even gaymershits like Bethesda with all their incompetence and shit coding skills manage to utilize the modding community, but Snapchat doesn't know how to utilize its vastly larger userbase. These people need to sack their management and replace it.

I've never touched Android development, but is Android's camera API really that broken? I've never heard of any apps besides Snapchat having an issue just using the camera as it was meant to be used, except for maybe needing workarounds when dealing with $10 chink phones.

don't know where that text is from but I've read a different motivation which has to do with speed. Some phones, specially older ones, will take a few seconds to focus and take the picture and snapchat wanted it to be instant on all phones. it's pretty dumb regardless of what their motivation is.

what "manual camera controls"? There are none in snapchat beyond the button to "take a picture" (save the viewfinnder). you can't send stored pictures as snaps either. But if you open a chat dialog in snapchat then you can send stored pictures as a chat attachment so that's a way around it.
